Default About offensive nicks - 04-01-2003, 06:01 AM

Everybody is free to choose their name (to a certain degree) on this forum, I know, but I couldn't help noticing the newest registered user is being 'nocureforcancer'.

What's up with that. I find this name way too offensive in a time where almost everybody knows a (close) relative who had/has this terrible disease. Hell, some people even may have (had) it themselves.

I know that we can't hide from the fact that cancer exists, and for sure, that is not my objective. Being confronted with it on this forum seriously offences me though.

the only thing worse than that name, would be the bullshit that came with it,
and the half-arsed justification..........well pointed out Tiwaz.

Maybe.

Maybe there's room voor nuancing the name. Doesn't make me like it any more. And not everybody knows that such a comedy exists (I didn't). Perhaps that's not a valid argument, I realize that, but still.

It's just that some names have an inherent rebellious and obnoxious nature. I think it's not necessary to adopt such a name. You're bound to step on some people's toes.

okay, lets talk about...

Amendment I

ah, yes, the good ol' First amendment...

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

now a quote explaining the highligted area's

"in laying NO previous restraints upon publications, and not in freedom from censure for criminal matter when published. EVERY FREEMAN has an undoubted right to lay what sentiments he pleases before the public; .....but if he publishes what is improper, mischievous, or illegal, he must take the consequence of his own temerity.
"...That is, he will be held accountable, by criminal proceeding or in civil action for damages, should he slander or libel another. And his oral and written speech is subject to restriction by the police power for the protection of the moral health of the community. Nor is he free to advocate the overthrow of civil order..."

Now, if you didnt understand what I wrote...well then I really have nothing to say...thats all in response to what Quze had to say by the way cool:

I can ban or delete his username, but until he has actually done anything wrong, he will be allowed to use the forums as you all can.

1. Luckily, I am not you (don't take this the wrong way, what I mean is that we're all different).

2. If you don't have a clue, no understanding whatsoever, all I can say is: Get some. One should always try to put some effort in understanding other people('s opinions).

My objective is not getting this name to be deleted or banned. He or she is free to choose his own name. Obviously there are limits, but that's up to the admins and mods to judge what precisely these limits are. I am merely trying to make a point. Some will agree, some will not.

Question is, if you want to be taken seriously, does this name help? I think not.

I am aware that this is just the internet, so I am not incredibly offended or anything. Enough to open a topic because of it though.

I often wonder why Freedom of Speech is bandied about here so much when it only actually applies to Americans. This is an American site but there are far more nationalities than just that so I don't see that Freedom of Speech is relavent here, especially seeing as it's not actually speech, it is written word.

As stated in that quote however it does say that if it contravenes any laws then the speaker is at risk of being punished.

Well here, on this forum, there are rules so if the name is deemed to go against them then it will be taken care of, Freedom of Speech or not.

Sorry, I just thought I'd point out that Freedom of Speech has very little to do with someone choosing a name on a website forum.

I'll go back to my hole now.

C'mon, stop having a hissy-fit...it's only a name. If you're that "thin-skinned", maybe you should go back into your closet because the world can be a rough place.

/ me wonders if he's the guy who banned me from his server 'cause i refused to change my name.

The world is my urinal
