My demo "review" -
11-09-2002, 10:36 AM
First impressions of this were good, i started my own server and had a run about messing around with different weapons. After a 3 player multi i entered a pub server with about 16 players. The game seems to play a bit differently from the original allied assault, i noticed straight away that the rifles now seem more dominant in the 2 maps that are included. I spent most of my time using the mosin nagant and was happily picking people off from every direction.
At the minute in the game there seems to be a good balance, no longer do snipers and mg whores dominate every map, i was using the ppsh for a while and was out gunning mg lamers with ease. Snipers now have to contend with more recoil but for some reason or other the recoil on the springfield is minimal compared to the soviet rifle or the g-43, though i assume this may have been a demo oversight. Other glitches included the lee enfield and the mosin nagant having reload animations but an aparant invisible magazine was being inserted into these rifles. eek: Also the portable mg-42 always seems to be floating above ground when deployed.
The demo played well and i didn't encounter many frame rate dips that some freak on the official forums was predicting.
Even though the allies have more weapons with the axis having the grenade launcher it sorta evens it out. There is a chance this could be whored though i would hope someone brings out a mod which sets limits to how many of a certain weapons each team can have,
My only real gripes with the demo are centered on the shoddy weapons models. You compare these to the original allied assault weapons and imo only the mg-42 and the lee enfield and possibly the sten are up to scratch. The mosin nagant looks very basic and has the wrong bolt on it, the g-43 just has a dire skin, the ppsh is ok aside from the fact that it has a hexagonal magazine instead of a drum mag, that and the hand holding it near the barrell looks freakishly like some kind of mutated claw.
Ea is one of if not THE biggest games publishers on the planet and thye have their own in house development teams. Now in my opinion it doesn't really make a shining example of their reputation if weapons models from a half life mod like day of defeat generally look a lot better than models done by supposed "professional moddelers".
The moddelers either (a) can't be arsed researching the models properly, (b) Havn't the time, or (c) they just make something that looks kind of similar to what theyre making and slap that ingame.
They went to the trouble of adding new useless animations to the characters in the multiplayer skin select screen but obviously couldn't take the time to research weapons properly and model them accurately. People might say weapons models are a small point but when you're playing the game the weapon is constantly on your screen and inaccurate\basic looking models become very obvious very quickly.
Id really like to see some improved models in a patch in the enar future, chris shelton said himself that the moddelling proccess is very in depth so maybe it would be better if eala made better models and released them rather than the community dtruggling to make them.
Overall im pleased enough with the enhancements to multiplayer and hopeflly no "realism" mods come out to balls up which is so far a good balance. The weapons models on the other hand leave a lot to be desired. eek:

Very basic looking model.

Not too bad but the bolts all wrong and the skin leaves a LOT to be desired.

Hexagon shaped drum mag instead of it being more circular, and fear the massive claw holding it. ed:

Looks ok but lets be honest, how hard can it possibly be to model a cylinder with a rectangle sticking out of it?

One of the best models in the game

Probably the best model in the game.

they probably thought it would be too unfair to give the springfield the same recoil as 10 round semi-automatic sniper rifles.
whats this grenade launcher i'm hearing about? all i found was a mortar launcher without much range

I agree totally GERARD. In my opinion this game isnt MOH, its alot better. It just LOOKS smoother, and with a built in REALISM mode, things are more balanced. No longer can you lob off a NADE, or ROCKET and expect to escape with just some cuts and bruises. I haven't had a chance to taste ALL the weapons, but the SMG seems alot less shaky this time around, which might get some UBER-REALIST going nuts.
And since I'm not a WWII-weapon buff, I cant even begin to be bothered by weapon MODELS. LOL. They look fine to me.
That said, we just more fricking servers!!

Just choose the uk skins for allies and you will be able to select it as your rifle.

Yeh, in multiplayer options each skin is preceded by "UK", for United Kingdom, "RA" for Red Army (russia), "US" for United States, and "DE", I'm guessing for Deutsche(land) something or other, (elite?).

I am pretty much just using UK weapons the whole time, I love the sten. IMO the best basic skin is the UK 6th Airborn Private? (<------trying to remember what it's called off the top of my head, if it's wrong feel free to correct me.)
EDIT: UK 6th Airborne Paratrooper

I had mixed feelings at the beginning.
Now i've play TOW a few times and love it. I was on some server with Jaizen and Star85 and it was great fun. I found myself using the PPSH almost exclusivley. I love this gun. Large magazine, good accuracy = excellent weapon. I really like the TOW. I like it when you get points for completing an objective. I really like the new health system. Overall a pretty good experience. Axis jot jacked with weapons though. I will probablt find myself using allied weapons cause their new and cooler. I'm bored of the regular stuff.
I kinda don'tlike the rocket launcher with the mauser. I got killed god knows how many times with that thing from close rangew while the other guy killed himself. Seems just like the rocket deal. Now everyone will be using that. But who am I to complain. Its in the game so may as well use it.
TOW i found to be a bit confusing at first but when I figured where everything was I was quickly devising a strategy.
I may have to find a clan to join if the full version keeps this up.

Good thing about the rocket though, is that you can no longer fire it while running, which added ALOT to the frustration of "rocket whores".

uhmm.. this will sound stupid but what the hell was that last one? i played that map a little just on my own and have only been in the TOW game with other ppl. And how do i get to use it?
Personally i dont care for the models and the smg's dont seem well balanced against other weapons. The german nade launcher is a whore when people realize how good it is (i myself was up to 100 kills during one sitting). the mortar so far is one of my fav weaps. Having it do real damage to building spots is really cool.
