Default The Thin Red Line..... - 11-25-2002, 04:54 AM

Although I havent finisehd watching the whole movie (almost finished) I think its pretty well done. The movie seems not to be based on the physical scars that leave on humans but the emotional one. I think its quite touching, thats probably because of the music which is great, again produced by Hans Zimmer. Not so much action but I think its a good film.

I think this movie has a deep meaning to it. I enjoyed it. This movie reminds of this WW1 book ccalled "strange meeting". That book was quite good.

Deep meaning ?

It's simple, really...

WAR IS BAD

LIVE YOUR LIFE TO THE FULLEST BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN SOME
DUMBASS POLITICIAN WILL DISAGREE WITH SOMEONE ON SOMETHING AND
PLACE YOU ON A HUMAN CHESSBOARD AS A PAWN.

Did I miss something ? biggrin:

I understand that they were trying to portray the human emotion side of war and the psychological scars that develop from combat, but I really found the movie too heady for me. It chugged along a little too slowly.

I felt that just when the movie was due for some balls-to-the-wall war action, someone would have a big emotional epiphany or breakdown and ruin the whole momentum.

Meh.

Band of brothers portrayed it better imo, but they also had 10 hours worth. I thought the action scenes were very well done and they had that insignifacant feel to it.

Agreed.

BoB had the correct balance of emotion, gritty realism, and action.

Ahhh - I seem to be the only ones who preferred The Thin Red Line to Speilbergs HIGHLY commercial Saving Private Ryan. For me TTRL had more "meat" to it than the easily forgettable SPR. SPR isnt a bad movie, its just the same kind of popcorn flick Speilberg has been doing for SOOOOOOO long. TTRL (which I believe is that line between human being and animal that the film was trying to show us; check out Apocalypse Now if you want a better understanding of that and a better film than both), tried to not go for the "easy answer" with violence and gore (although it had alot of it), and actually tell a good story.

SPR just had such a DISPOSABLE storyline that I couldn't get into. I mean blah blah blah war is bad, we've heard it ALLLL before. At least IN SPR we get some REAL roles -

We got a glory hungry Corporals, Sergeants who refuse to risk the lives of his men needlessly, jokers who are the first to "go", and your assorted band of men who OBVIOUSLY get scarred by the war.

To me SPR was just a fun, violent romp through WWII with a quirky storyline about saving some guy who wasn't the guy, etc. etc. etc.

Personally, nothing I've ever seen in movies has hit me as hard or caused me to think more than Omaha Beach in SPR. Nothing.

SPR's plot may have been simplistic, maybe even a bit predictable, but it's the war movie that I'll measure every other war movie.

It's all preference. If you like TTRL better, sweet...that's cool with me.
