Default 2 pc's (winXPpro) 1 ADSL & I want to file share- possibl - 12-10-2002, 09:17 AM

I have 2 pc's, both running winXP Pro. They both have 2 NIC's each. They are both connected to The Internet through 1 NIC to a HUB. (ADSL, works great)

I have a cross-over cable connecting them via the other NIC. (for file & printer sharing)

I try to run the winXP home networking wizard. It seems to work, but when I try to view the "workgrouped computers" it either fails to find any comps or it says "you do not have permission to bla bla ask the network administrator" I ask myself if I have permission and I say "yes" but my computer fails to listen to me.

Yes, they have the same workgroup name.
I think I am using TCP/IP. I have also tried IPX/SPX. Plus I have tried taking out every protocol on there and try them seperatly.

I don't understand much about this new fangled computer stuff PLUS I'm new to WinXP (used win98 until 1 month ago).

Hope you kind and brainy people out there can offer some advice and/or an answer to my headache.

thanks for your time!

Do you have the "Microsoft File & Print Sharing" service loaded?
Also check to see if you have the "NetBEUI" protocol installed, it allows MS systems to talk to each other on a local area network.

when i click on "file and printer sharing" and then click install, then choose "protocol" it says "cannot locate files needed, please insert disk or CD"

so i insert my winXP pro CD and it can't find any drivers for it. I tried my friends CD too and it ends up with the same result

yep, Netbui is in there too.

That would be a problem! You need the "F & P Sharing" service! Try yet another CD.

[quote="Da_Bian":0761b]"cannot locate files needed, please insert disk or CD"[/quote:0761b]

Is that the exact error you are receiving or is there additional information such as an error number or any more information?

ok here are the exact words

Windows was unable to find any drivers for this device.

If you have a disk that contains the updated driver, or you wish to search in another location, click OK.

I don't think it's talking about my NIC's. Both of them work, I tested it with the ADSL modem and I can get on the net fine.

I found this:

The information in this article applies to:

- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a Microsoft Windows 2002 version of this article, see Q254527.

SYMPTOMS
========

Under the following conditions, you may experience one or more of the following
symptoms:

- When you double-click My Network Places in Windows Explorer, an incomplete
browse list is displayed.

- Computers that do not have file and printer sharing turned on do not appear
in the browse list.

- If a Windows-based domain controller does not have file and printer sharing
turned on, Windows-based computers that try to use the browse list display
the following information about Event ID 8032:

The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on
transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{XXXXXXX-9F03-42B2-AB84-12EEEFD572E9}. The
backup browser is stopping.

- A Windows-based client user who is trying to browse My Network Places
receives the following information about Event ID 8032:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: <Browser>
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8032
Date: 16-Feb-2000
Time: 10:22:31
User: N/A
Computer: <Client>
Description: The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too
many times on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{XXXXXXX-9F03-42B2-AB84-12EEEFD572E9}. The backup browser
is stopping.
Data: 0000: 0000007a

- On the Windows-based domain controller that does not have file and printer
sharing turned on, the following information appears:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Server
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2504
Date: 16-Feb-2000
Time: 11:59:22
User: N/A
Computer: <DC>
Description: The server could not bind to the transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{XXXXXXX-F096-4E5C-A847-F8F095C45053}.
Data: 0000: aa 05 00 00

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Server
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2505
Date: 16-Feb-2000
Time: 11:59:31
User: N/A
Computer: <DC>
Description: The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetbiosSmb
because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could
not start.
Data: 0000: 34 00 00 00 4...

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur if the File and Print Service component was not selected
during the initial setup of the server or if that component is no longer
selected. When this occurs, the Server service does not bind to the NetBIOS
interface. A Windows-based computer that becomes a backup browser but that does
not have file and printer sharing turned on cannot share the browse list with
clients. Any computer that is to be included in the browse list must also have
file and printer sharing turned on.

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this behavior, turn on file and printer sharing on Windows-based
domain controllers and on any computer that is in the browse list.

To turn on file and printer sharing in Windows XP, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click
Networks.

2. Click Add, click Service, and then click Add.

3. In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft. In the Network Services box, click
"File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks", and then click OK.

4. Click OK.

5. Restart the computer when you are prompted to do so.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are
listed at the beginning of this article.

yes... sounds all too familiar.

i have tried at the command prompt

net start server

and it say this

The server service is starting.....
The server service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 2 has occurred.
The system cannot find the file specified.

And I have tried to start the "net start browser" command... here is what it says

System error 1068 has occurred.
The dependency or group failed to start.

Need File & Printer sharing....hmm... how to get it???

It may actually be a device issue with your NICs. Check out the NIC configuration to see if there are any different device settings you can change and give it a try.

workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administratot of this service to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

That's what it keeps saying to me.

Good Morning or should I say good afternoon!

I'm not sure how you would go about downloading the "F & P Share Service" other than the CD. I did several searches through "Google" and on the Microsoft sites and found nothing.

Another question: Do you have an account on both resources/systems? What I mean is do you have a user account "DoeJ" on both systems with matching passwords? Also do these accounts have user rights and permissions to the resource, ie. files/folders?

I am using one dsl account... they log in perfectly to the net. Both computers can connect at any time.

I took out the second NIC in both computers now... I am trying to network them using the HUB as a gateway connection.

It's possible to connect to the net and share files over this system isn't it?

Internet
|
HUB
| |
| pc1
|
pc2

I know I have to disable the windows firewall..... yes security is at risk.

So far I am unsuccessful. It returns with the error above (workgroup not accessable).

Any suggestions? Plus have you any advice about security?

-------------------------
Previously my sytem looked like this....

Internet
|
HUB
| |
| pc1
| :
| : <----cross-over cable (for file sharing only)
| :
pc2

It didn't work this way either... I wanted it this way so that I could share files securely.
