Default Map Conversion - 03-05-2003, 08:58 AM

Since MOHAA, SH, RTCW, and Q3 are all based in the same platform, How difficult is it (if at all) to convert some of the better maps to any of the other games?

I play AA, SH, and RTCW and some of the maps would be fun if transferrable.

Any tip's or comments?

As far as I know, this is very difficult, if not impossible to do. Although it is true that all of the games you mentioned utilize the Quake III engine, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are alike.

Consider MoHAA and Spearhead, for instance. From what I heard, Spearhead maps are not 'compatible' with MoHAA, because the maps in Spearhead use an altered/modified Q3 engine. So just extracting a map from a Spearhead .pk3 wouldn't work.

I guess that if it were easy, we would have seen some MoHAA servers running Spearhead maps by now. Since a lot of I-have-been-playing-MoHAA-since-day-one-I'm-not-a-nooby-EAGames-ruined-MoHAA-with-that-damn-expansion-patch-that-was-way-to-expensive people aren't really fond of Spearhead. Including myself.

The files aren't entirely the same, but since they are the same engine, the architecure can be re-amped. All that's needed are models, textures, and other small effects.

It isn't impossible, just look at Castle Wolfenstein and Bridge Overpass, both maps from RTCW & Americas Army.

Hmm, I thought they also changed the engine a bit (from MoHAA -> Spearhead). To remove some polygon threshold or so.

Anyway, it may not be impossible for some people; it isn't very easy to do either.

Didn't know about Castle Wolfenstein and Bridge Overpass...

They added a new effect between MOH & SH that will not draw models & textures unless they are visible by 90%, which really sucks. But, other than that, same gaming engine.

Not an effect just a new culling system, basically hidden surface removal, what you can't see the engine doesn't draw.
