Default motherboard and cpu - 04-18-2003, 03:20 AM

motherboard:

http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=112 ... 2&scat=555

cpu:

http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=111 ... 2&scat=554

are they compatible? and when the socket ( 478) is the same then it should be compatible no matter what right?

and most cpus are 512kb cache right? so if the mother board's onboard burst cache is 400mhz would it be compatible?

once you install the cpu there's no way to take it out and replace it right? and if there's the coating of cooling foam on the fan then it'll have to be replaced right?

1) That's a 400mhz bus chip, meaning it's probably Socket 423. Socket 423 mobos do not support the faster 533mhz FSB.

2) If you want to take the processor out, you lift the socket lever (right next to the socket) to lift/insert the processor.

3) "cooling foam" = Thermal Grease, such as Artic Silver. Yes, whenever you upgrade a CPU, you should clean the heatsink/CPU heatspreader with a brilo pad, and apply a new spread of thermal grease.

4) If the CPU gets overheated, in most newer motherboards, the PC will sound some sort of alarm, or will automatically shut down. It will not save data, shut down properly, etc. . just shut off.
