Man that takes some balls.
The guy was up there for 5 days, so I suppose at some point you have to make a decision. Stay here with no food or water and hope that someone finds me within a day or two or die of dehydration, or cut my arm off and cimb down the moutain.
I don't think anyone could truthfully answer this question until we were in the stiuation. But man, thats crazy.

I'd do it. Prostetics are pretty good nowadays, and I'd still be able to rock climb with a fake arm.

Better that than dying. Just bite down on something and cut away.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. It's like that Rugby team that ate eachother when their plane crashed. Or the story of that guy that went to Tibet, that had to hide inside a Horses dead body from Bandits. All true, and all done under extreme hardship. Life or Death.

I just dont think anyone can comprehend the idea of cutting their own arm off. cutting first through the skin, massive amounts of blood loss and slicing through the tissue. hitting the bone and slicing through the marrow. then you gotta stop the bleeding!

Yeah, it'd be RIDICULOUSLY painful. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't do it. But if I was in his position, I might. Maybe his arm was numb enough from the boulder or whatever the hell was on it, that he didn't feel it? oOo:

Well i'm sure he tied his arm off as tight as he could to stop as much of the bleeding as possible.
I mean, look as the wars previous to the 20th century. When someone had to have a limb amputated you pretty much had to bear down and take it. Maybe with some alcohol, but still pretty painful. Only real difference is maybe better tools than a pocket knife and you didn't have to do it yourself.
I think the psychological thing is almost as bad as the physical pain. I don't think anyone could really comprehend cutting off their own arm, if someone is doing it to you, you may not have a choice, but doing it voluntarily is a different story.

sometimes when you are in huge pain, your body will be in so much shock that you cant really feel anything, so he probably cut his arm off because he couldnt feel it from the shock of being trapped
