Well, i'm not sure about A, but for B you could suggest that the idea of people being paid unfairly goes both ways, with them being paid too little (ie: Sweatshops, me), and getting paid too much (ie: Politicians, not me). I only say this, because if you initially look at the question, "Employment groups who do not receive fair wages", it only conjours up images of the poor, but the wages rich people receive could also be construed as "unfair"
I don't know. I'm tired :P

In a competitive job market, theoritically, everyone is paid fairly. Otherwise, jobs that paid unfairly would go unfilled. Sure CEO's might make astronomical salaries, but very few others within that Corp. stand to lose their job if the stock price goes down $5. Convience store clerks might get paid next to nothing, but thats about how hte job requirements read too. And you rarely see a shortage of them.
Now, take two identical jobs - one pays well, the other sucks. Most people are going to try for the good paying one. Typically, the best qualified will get the better paying job. Too many qualified personell in a field, and the market is saturated, and people are willing to work for less. Its really supply and demand, just like any other market. The people that might truely get under paid, are the ones that do a job for the pure love of it, and not the money. But then again, does that satisfaction count as compensation too? In my opinion, yes, its just not monetary compensation and cant be measured quantitatively.
Of course this is all theoritical

You have to look at athletes in the sense of how much revenue do they bring in. Its easy to say that no one is worth $250,000+ (much more is some cases) for an hour of work (game). But first, its not an hour of work, an athlete needs to stay in shape pretty much year round to stay competitive or lose his job. And how much $ did he make for the team in tickets, concessions and tv revenue. It has to be much, much more or the team will not survive. Back to supply and demand. The supply of first string major league ball players is pretty slim, and the pay is pretty high. The supply of second rate ballpayers is much bigger, with the pay being much less, if any. Not much tv revenue for AA baseball either.
It has also been suggested that in some sports, athletes are very unfairly paid. They bring in all the revenue, and the owners keep the lions share of the profits. Of course, the people suggesting this are typically the players or their agents.
The other extreme is sweatshops. If these workers could get better jobs, they would. Many work in sweatshops because they are in the country illegally. They dont meet the conditions required to hold a 'normal' job. They lack vital job skills for normal jobs and are probably paid fairly. There are extreme cases where thy are closer to slaves than employees, but those are criminal activities, not free market. I am also making these statements assuming that practices like the "company store" no longer exist. At least in my part of the world. Again, those would be criminal, and not free market.

2nd Paper
Political Science 118 2nd Assignment
Dr. Robert Lane Winter, 2003
1. [20 pts.]Select four of the following questions. Make certain that you clearly demonstrate that you actually saw the films: ["Eyes on the Prize II: Two Societies"; "Slim Hopes"; American Dream"; and "Making Sense of the Sixties: In a Dark Time" are available for viewing in the Zahnow Library's A-V Center.]
• Drawing upon the "Sixty Minutes" segment regarding "Racial Tracking", in a substantive paragraph, describe the controversy regarding the placement of students in this school district.
• Drawing upon the film "Eyes on the Prize II: Two Societies",in a substantive paragraph, explain whether the violent events in Detroit should be considered a "riot" or a "rebellion."
• Drawing upon the "Sixty Minutes" segment regarding the physician-assisted suicide election in Oregon, in a substantive paragraph, provide two reasons explaining how you would have voted on this issue.
• Drawing upon the "Sixty Minutes" segment regarding the Charleston, South Carolina hospital policy for pregnant women using crack-cocaine, in a substantive paragraph, provide two reasons explaining your position about this policy.
• Drawing upon the film "Slim Hopes", in a substantive paragraph, explain to what extent you find this analysis of our "obsession with thinness" convincing.
• Drawing upon the film "American Dream", in a substantive paragraph, provide two reasons explaining whether or not, if you were a Hormel worker, you would have crossed the picket line to return to work.
• Drawing upon the film "Making Sense of the Sixties: In a Dark Time", in a substantive paragraph, discuss how the protestors of the 1960s are similar to and/or different from the current anti-war protestors.
2.[10 pts.] On pp. 255-259, the author discusses liberty, paying special attention to John Stuart Mill. Presently, Mill's analysis of "self-regarding" and "other-regarding" behavior may be useful in analyzing controversies surrounding these three topics: prostitution, sodomy laws, and drug use. Drawing upon your understanding of Mill, select one of these three controversies, and complete the following tasks: a) In a substantive paragraph, explain how your selected controversial behavior could be considered "self-regarding behavior;" b) In a substantive paragraph, explain how that same behavior could be considered "other-regarding behavior."
3.[10 pts.] On pp. 308-316, the author discusses both support for and criticisms of welfare. Drawing upon this discussion, complete the following tasks: a) In a substantive paragraph, summarize two reasons for supporting welfare; b) In a substantive paragraph, summarize two reasons for attacking welfare.
4.[15 pts.] On pp. 338-346, the author discusses both the attraction and failures of Market economies. Drawing upon this discussion, complete the following tasks: a) In a substantive paragraph, describe two reasons why the Market is attractive; b) Find an article that illustrates one of the selected attractions, and in a brief paragraph, explain how it does so; c) In a substantive paragraph, describe two failures of the Market; d) Find an article that illustrates one of the selected failures, and in a brief paragraph, explain how it does so. ** Attach the 1st page of each selected article to the back of your paper. **
5.[10 pts.] In class, we discussed the various criteria that might be looked at in determining a "fair wage." Drawing upon your understanding of work (your own work place, family and friends that you know and observe, etc.), complete the following tasks: a)In a substantive paragraph, select someone that you believe does receive a "fair wage", and provide two reasons for your example; b)In a substantive paragraph, select someone that you believe does not receive a "fair wage", and provide two reasons for your example.
6.[15 pts.] In chapter twelve, the author examines three concepts: tradition, reform, and revolution. Drawing upon this discussion, complete the following tasks: a) In a substantive paragraph, select a tradition that is common to many members of a society, and explain to what extent you support or oppose continuing that tradition; b) In a substantive paragraph, select a reform that many Americans are calling for, and explain to what extent you support or oppose continuing that reform; c) In a substantive paragraph, summarize both what you consider to be the best reason to support a revolution, and the best reason to oppose a revolution.
7.[20 pts./5 pts. each] The War in Iraq has dominated the news for the past several months. Arguably, it may be the most historic event in the next fifty years. Accordingly, it deserves special attention and analysis. Drawing upon the massive amount of press coverage assigned to this war, complete the following tasks:
In chapters 2-12, the author examines thirty-three political concepts. You need to select four concepts, and complete the following tasks for each selected concept. ** You cannot choose more than one concept from any one chapter. For example, you cannot write on both "power" and "authority", since both are included in chapter five. **
TASK: For each selected concept, find an article related to the War in Iraq, and, in a substantive paragraph, first briefly summarize the book's definition of the concept, and then explain how the article clearly pertains to the concept. **Be certain to attach the 1st page of each article to the back of your paper.** In sum, you will need to write four paragraphs, on four concepts, using four articles. To assist you, I have provided a news link for the Washington Post. Check the external links folder in BLACKBOARD, and open the folder that says "2nd Paper." You are not required to use this source, however!!
Your grade will be based upon the following criteria:
__ Meeting the Wednesday, April 30,2003, 4:00 p.m. deadline.** You may turn this paper in anytime prior to the deadline. Drop the paper off by sliding it under my office door (Brown 319). Do not leave it with the faculty secretary, or Evening Services.
__ Writing in complete sentences, coherent paragraphs, and in your own words.
__ Do not write using the second person "you".
__ Using specific illustrative examples to support your analysis and arguments.
__ Explicitly labeling each part of your paper.
__ Typing the assignment.
__ Demonstrating a solid understanding of the assigned readings, class discussions, and films.
__ Consistently following instructions.
__ Using proper grammar, mechanics, spelling, and syntax.

Isn't it amazing how you can do so much under pressure at the last minute, but you'll be damned if you are going to do it before the day it is due biggrin:
