i think his songs would be much better with just the awesome guitar stuff. he's much better at guitar than singing.

...seriously tho, I think Hendrixs voice is great and fits the music like a glove, he's very emotive,
great sense of phrasing/timing, and the pure funkiness of the guy just shines thru,
funny you mention it tho...I think the question should be: "Is the vocalising of Jimi Hendix underrated?"

HAW HAW HAW!
Jimi's voice was fine. I agree his playing was better than his singing, but that's a no-brainer when you're talking about one of the greatest guitar players who ever graced God's green Earth.

Jimi Hendrix sang because no guitarist ever makes it big without sining. I love to hear guitars play but i cant listen to it for more than 10 minutes without going "errmm this could use some singing to add dimension".

I have always thought he sucked at singing, because he does.
He is offbeat, his voice just plain sucks from smoking so much...
That isn't saying I don't like Jimi, I have almost all of his songs on my computer, and we all know he is the best guitarist ever, but he seriously could not sing. I have always thought that "Wind Cries Mary" would have been at least 3 times as good of a song if someone who could sing sang it.

If you listen, hendrix has a bit of a lisp. I think that adds to his character. He is by no means an excellent singer, but he can sing, hit a note, and add soul to his songs, all while playing his shit hot guitar riffs.
The hendrix experience wouldnt have been much of a hendrix experience if they had an additional member singing. How often do you stand and look at the guitarists or drummers when a guy/gal is singing and communicating with the audience? except for when they got a solo...
With hendrix, all eyes were on him. 'nuff said.
