Default Nvidia possibly moving to ONE driver update per year. - 10-22-2003, 12:04 PM

[quote:22a32]Nvidia plans to launch its next reference driver update, release 5216, soon. The company's so-called "50-series" of drivers will likely be followed by a new 55-series early next year, and a 60-series some months afterwards. However, according to an Nvidia representative, though the company has traditionally released reference drivers quarterly, it won't necessarily continue to do so unless needed, and that ideally, the company hopes to release as few as one driver update per year--though on this point, a representative acknowledged that the GeForce FX line of cards has a known issue with full-scene anti-aliasing (especially in recent games like Halo for the PC), and that the company hopes to address this issue soon. The company will also launch its new FX 5700 and 5950 cards soon.[/quote:22a32]

If that happens you can kiss nvidia goodbye, One driver update per year? wtf. So if you buy a game and it doesn't work with the current drivers you have to wait a year for new drivers to test it with? oOo: Not to mention that Ati has a new drivers revision with improved performance every month. This just seems retarded by nvidia and will probably put the final nail in their coffin.

it said it won't necessarily continue to do so unless needed, so if a good game comes along with a critical problem they would fix it.
Switch to Nvidia, Gerard biggrin: ATI = stupid: hehe just kidding. I think both companys are good and each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Personaly though, i like Nvidia.

I can't really understand the thinking behind this if it does happen. So basically one driver update per year = 1 speed bump per year as opposed to ati's 12 drivers a year with better performance virtually all 12 times?

nvidia = stupid:

nvidia needs to put out a driver a week until they can get the fx cards to run dx9 games. I would say that its needed.

ATI=amazing, i love my ATI Radeon 9200....its not the greatest ATI, but its well worth its money, for about $120 dollars i got a well made 128 meg video card, it improved my games so much.

I just installed the nvidia 52.16betadets. All I can say is wow. If they can release quality like this once a year then I am all for it. I love ATi don't get me wrong but man the new dets brought my 3dmark03 score from 1453 to 2356. Card = G3 Ti200 128MB. If only drivers could have this kind of quality every single time they go public . but back on topic, ya a 1 driver a year thing would suck donkey balls.

Have you noticed that noone uses 3dmark to benchmark cards anymore, ever since nividia got busted tweaking their drivers to cheat on 3dmark scores.

I dont think nvidia is going to be around a year from now. Their current cards have such a bad rep and they arent showing any signs of improving.

Sadly I have to agree. The recent cheating on the 3D mark programs has just totally been a sad thing. I guess it's back to manual benching with a new game /the Asus 5900fx Ultra has performed pretty well but has a hefty price tag on it.
