im not saying that im not a noob in photoshop so dont flame me.
well, if you dont know anything of photo editing yourself, go to image-adjustment and auto color/contrast/levels. you can always potter some yourself with the original levels/curves/color balance/brightness contrast, until you think it looks good.
thats one of the things it needs imo. 2 other things; new font and a stroke.

You are definatly on the right track Winters.
Keep doing what you are doing.
Personally I don't like it either , but I can tell you are looking for source pics that are different and images that say something.
For that ... Good Job.
Once you get your style down the rest will flow like water my friend.

.... crappy pic, text, and bg.. work harder.. try different texts, blend pics, and dont make crappy bgs. basically all teh advice i can give you is use tutorials, practice, or just get your artistic mind more advanced and in depth.

the soldier face looks good, you can go with that
find a cool pic to use as a base background
layer and fade some text or other pics that dont crowd the pic as a whole
change the font to something cooler and give the text effects, like drop contrast (copy layer, invert, and gaussian blur accordingly), etc
youre on the right track bro, keep going your definately improving rock:
