painless headshot? -

this is for anyone who knows about the brain or neuroscience
plz, dont ridicule this question if you have no proof youre right
the case of phineas gage- 1850s, gage had a railroad spike shoot thru his head, severing the connections between the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex. he survived the accident, but could not control his emotions, acted like a 2 y/o
thing is, when it happened, he didnt feel too much pain outside of the initial shock; he could walk, talk, etc. this is because there are few pain receptors (nociceptors) in the brain
so my question is, technically, are gunshot wounds to the head not as painful as they look?

You'd probably feel it for a split second, sa the bullet just touches your skull... then its over.

It's the same type of question as: did the French and other people during the Dark Ages feel anything when they were sent to the guillotine? People have speculated how long you have vision and know what is going on. I think in most cases, a gunshot wound to the head would not be that painful, and even if it was, it would only be for a few seconds before you died.

Supposedly after your head has been cut off your brain still functions for like 30 seconds, so you're still 'alive' for that long.

the only nerves that can 'provide feeling' around your brain is your skin.
You could touch your own brain and not know it (if your skull is cut open).
All you would feel is a break in your skin, on your forehead, or whatever.
Practically painless.
Easiest way to die of course is though c02 poisoning. You pass out, and then die later..
(edit: and no, this isn't the same as getting a kife through the neck.. you would feel that, kind of. It isn't like 10 seconds, you're thinking of a chicken or something.. it's more like 2-3 seconds. And your head would have no clue wtf is going on.. so it's basically painless also. But it's totally different then being shot in the head.. yay for biology, haha)

that is true about the severed head functioning for roughly 15 up to 30 secs
and there are plenty of receptors in the neck, so no doubt, for the insant that it happens it hurts like nothing else, although, youre right you die soon after so it makes no difference
but not all gun shot head wounds can be fatal
gage's wound went through the left cheek and out the top of his head, the rod was over a footlong, propelled by a dynamite explosion
so depending on the location of the shot, it is possible to survive
i think that the only lasting effects would be for the brain and its functionality
its wierd tho that it might be fairly painless

Well it depends on the part of the brain the putcured wound is..if it hits the coronal then yes it will most likely hurt eminsully, if it hits the brain stem and spinal cord it will hurt less but you wont get up and start walking, if it hits the MRI Axial then your dead...if it hits the most of the major parts like that will hurt a lot, if it went through the Occipital lobe if your lucky it might not hurt because thats were the feeling of pain in most of your body is, but you then wouldnt have much feeling especially not back in the 1850's your feeling of the upper body would be pretty much nothing. The cerebellum would kill you. The parretal lobe wouldnt hurt to much when first impact although after a while during rehabilitation it would give you extreme headaches in the upper back of your head, some ppl known to have sustained injuries in that region have been know to kill themselves because of the horrible long run headaches. But thats about all I know about brain stuff, I only know this cause this is what we are studying now, you ask this question in a few months and Ill be like.."huh...what are you talking about?"
