Default Bubba Ho-Tep - 05-28-2004, 08:17 AM

Man, amazon.com rocks out with its cock out. The flick came out May25th and they said I'd get my copy shipped to me by June 9th. I got it yesterday. w00t!!

I loved this movie, but it wasn't exactly what I expected. I was anticipating a mad-cap romp of frantic Elvis mayhem, with Bruce Campbell at the helm, barely in control of his mania...kicking mummy ass and such.

What I got was a very reflective portrayal of Elvis, had he lived to see his twilight years. It was a lot more serious than I thought it would be, but it still worked. The funny one-liners were classic Bruce Campbell. Ossie Davis was such a great casting choice to play a delusional "JFK".

Pure B-movie awesomeness. rock:

Based on the Bram Stoker Award nominee short story by acclaimed author Joe R. Lansdale, Bubba Ho-tep tells the “true” story of what really did become of Elvis.

We find the King (Bruce Campbell) as an elderly resident in an East Texas rest home, who switched identities with an Elvis impersonator years before his “death”, then missed his chance to switch back. Elvis teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow nursing home resident who thinks that he is actually President John F. Kennedy, and the two valiant old codgers sally forth to battle an evil Egyptian entity who has chosen their long-term care facility as his happy hunting grounds…

“Mind-blowing in its originality, Bubba Ho-tep transcends the “late-night cult” genre by virtue of captivating performances by Campbell and Davis, and the assured direction of Don Coscarelli. Coscarelli handles the bizarre material with such precision that you actually believe that Elvis and JFK are alive and not quite well. He treats the characters, and old age for that matter, with such respect that no matter how absurd things become, you are completely with him. Bubba Ho-tep, with its cinematic flash and terrifically offbeat humor, is a fantastic story of redemption, courage and friendship.”

That sums it up pretty well.

Yep, he was portraying the real Elvis. He switched places with an impersonator named Sebastian Haff, but had a contract stating that he could switch back at any time.

The contract was lost in an unfortunate BBQ accident. HAW!
