I'd say you'd be getting better value for money buying an Athlon 64 3200 or 3400.

well, i would advise against 64 bit amd. i got the a64 3200+ and i am currently having massive compatiblity problems with all kinds of applications. mostly gaming. i have the asus k8v deluxe mobo and a gig of corsair xms ddr 400. your better going with the xp 3200 man , seriously. the amount of money you will save by getting the xp chip outwieghs the slight increase of performance the fx would get you. xp3200 is like 200, the fx is like 700+? ed: and ya 1gig of ram is fine right now.

p.s. unless your uber rich . then you can forget what i said biggrin:

64 BIT will run fine as long as you upgrade to windows 64 bit workstation OS. Otherwise your not even really utilizing the processing power you paid for. As far as the 1 GB ram... I will disagree. Go with the 2 GB if you can afford it. Especially if you ever do an advanced large photoshop stuff or any video editing. 2GB ram will produce real time previews through Adobe After Effects w/ no problems. As far as gaming, you will not notice a difference on the current games on the market.

64-bit XP and drivers are NOT optimized. Do NOT upgrade to it...

However, when it IS optimized, you will be happy to have purchased that
64 bit processor. I don't recommend anything higher than Athlon 64 3400,
9800XT and 1GB Corsair CL2 timing RAM... as more means overkill and
little in the way of extra BANG for the expensive hardware purchased. If
you have difficulty running HL2 and DOOM3 with an A64 3000+, 9800 Pro,
1GB Corsair and associated hardware, it's either your software configuration
or the programmers are retarded and did NOT optimize their code.

Ram timings don't made any difference on Athlon 64 processors?

Well, I have about a $3,500 spending allowance for this system, so I probably will be buying all of that. The thing is, I do not want a system for the games out now. I want a system that will run games for the next year and farther away.

Polemarcus -
What is the windows 64 bit workstation OS? A new OS coming out soon, or is it already available?

I have heard, that the FX is way better than the 3200+, and the 3400+. I will definatly be getting the FX.
