Default Another Book Thread - 07-27-2004, 06:20 PM

For the summer, I've been giving a bunch of choices to read. I went to Boarder's today and looked up a couple of books.

The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer seems to be really good from the reviews. I went to the store, but they didn't have it in stock; I couldn't sample any sections.

It is 400 some pages if I remember correctly from the booklist. I have to hand in a 5 page paper (really easy, more so if it is a 400 page book) and watch 2 movies (easy as hell...2 page paper per movie). August is going to be really busy for me, but I'm sure if it's a book that I'd love, then I think I can easily finish the 400 pages.

Have any of you guys ever read this book? I saw the reviews on [url:44006]http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1574882856/002-0469292-7338434?v=glance[/url:44006] and they all seem to be positive.

I'm going to read either this book or The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. What would you guys go with?

The Universe in a Nutshell owns. Steven Hawking hand wrote it.

But it's not really a novel, it's more like a thing with all his shit about time travel and everything.

I already read the DaVinci Code. Good book... you can go through it in a
day if you're not lazy like I am.

is this for high school or college? anyways, i havent read forgotten soldier, but it looks really good if your into ww2 combat, etc like i am. davinci code is an awesome book, and its prequel angels and demons is awesome too, but they arent higher level or college books so to say and wouldnt make good analyitical papers, there more of a "fun" read.

yeah, I'll be a senior in highschool. I don't think they're looking for a research style paper...i think it's busy work more than anything. My biggest concern is just the 440 pages of The Forgotten Soldier. I'm usually not the person to throw a book down if it's too long, but I'd just want to make sure I can finish it in time with my busy schedule.

I think it would have been alot better if they had the WWII book in stock at the store so i could preview some of it and get a feel of what I'm about to dive into. I read through a bit of The DaVinci Code and thought it was alright. My friend said it was really good, so basically that's the only reason I'm thinking about reading the book by Dan Brown.

davinci code is a good book, but is this for ap english literature or just a reading asignment for an english 4 class? if its ap english, all of your essays have to be analytical im not talking research paper im talking about you have to be able to analyze what the author was talking about, the literary devices used, tone, shifts, etc. you can't really do this with davinci code, my ap english teacher always told us it wasnt "ap level" and a fun book. if this is for ap english let me recomend heart of darkness (u will love it if you like apocolypse now), the painted bird, and the stranger, and anything by shaskespear.

I've read The Unknown Soldier Gary, it's a really well written and no crap
account, you almost get shellshock yourself as he describes the death
throes of the German war machine. 10/10

The Da Vinci Code was good as well, the amount of detail relating to the
Holy Grail and the Church Vs. humanistic spirituality is an eye-opener and
would give plenty of meat to write about, but the book does have that
"airport novel" feel about it...like a screenplay. I couldn't put it down,
but only because I inadvertantly super-glued my fingers to the cover. oOo:

Heart of darkness may be a short book, but one of them ost complex and deverse I ever had to read. I compare the imeprialism to modern America in ways. Such a book.

I am currently reading this

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 39-3088720

pretty good look into some of the action and atrocities that went on during that time
