Ok braniacs, what do you suggest??
I'm slapping a system together for my buddy who just wants to surf the net, d/load and burn music, and just do school work on it. So far, this is what he gave me:
Case w/ 350w p/s and 2 usb ports up front.
80G HHD Ultra ATA
Soundblaster Live sound card
Ethernet card
52x cd-cd/rw
6+1 card reader w/2 usb ports
GeForce 400MX vid card
He wants to spend no more than $150 on a processor, mobo, and memory. What do you guys recommend i get from NewEgg to meet this criteria?
....remember, i need a mobo that will accept some usb plugins for his case and card reader. Post your shopping cart link here.

pick up a 2400+ or a 2500+ and a shuttle an35n for pretty cheap, will perform well
that motherboard has 2 onboard USB, onboard 5.1, onboard lan, and comes with a 2 port USB card thing
memory... crucial is probably the best in the cheap range
if that proc is too much, grab a 1700 or even a 1400 and OC them.

bah 2400 you only get 256 cache and only 266 fsb... as well as the 2500 barton you get 333 fsb with 512 cache.. good decent processor...
even though the 2400 is clocked at faster speeds .. benchmarks are lower..
http://www.tomshardware.com and I would pick a shuttle but some things go wrong with them..but there cheaper then most mboards and they are decent for price...http://motherboards.bizrate.com ... --419.html theres some for ya... make sure you get the right one of course.. go with one that has an nforce2 ultra chipset... here...

Ontopic. that looks like a good system for what he wants. It might be cheaper to just find a Mobo with an onboard vid card if he doesnt plan on playing games. And DVD burners are a nifty thing to have

Taking a look at:
ASUS A7V600-X mobo ($56)
Athlon XP 2200 proc ($69)
Kingston PC-2700 (128x2) ($52)
for a total of $177.
Very close to target......what do you think of components??

Yeah, it's an old GeForce 400MX. He's not a gamer...just likes his music while surfing.
