I just got back from seeing it (early showing with my brother...he's a manager at a movie theater). Spielberg and John Williams...hmmm it MUST be a great movie. FALSE, unfortunately. Tom Cruise, as much of a psycho path that he is, did really well in the movie in my opinion. The music was almost non-existent; it wasn't until atleast 30mins into the film that a single note was played. The ending was THE WORST ever. I won't say any spoilers, but you'll agree that it's pretty gay.

I know it's based off of the book, but some things need to be added or altered a bit when making a movie. There are sooooooo many things that are left unexplained that it pisses me off.


Right up to the ending, I'd rate it a 6/10 for Cruise's acting which boosts the score. The ending, well that killed my rating. At the final scene, I'd rate it a 4/10.

I thought the concept of the remake was cool. But the inclusion of tom cruise ruins the whole thing for me and consequently turned me off to it. So i'm going to see land of the dead instead.

If the ending is the same as in the book, well that figures. Some people will be upset that that ending is too boring and gay, but if they change it for hollywood more people would be upset that it's not like the book. You can't please everyone.

I saw it last Friday at a screening, and it was probably as close to classic Spielberg as you'll get. He went the smart route and focused not on the entire invasion but on a set of characters that are forced to survive in a world that is being conquered by an alien race. There are some huge effects shots but they are not in your face like most summer blockbusters. The action is pretty intense, and the tension is even better. This movie is pretty creepy for a big budget action flick, so be prepared for that. It's definitely not ID4

The ending is appropriate, and follows the original story pretty closely. I was very surprised and I hope this is a sign that big blockbuster movies are changing for the better, because this summer we've had some really decent ones with Batman Begins and Star Wars.

You'll like the movie as long as you ignore the fact that Tom Cruise is really a robot sent to earth to study mankind and influence us all in his Scientology ways. Oh that crazy Tom Cruise.

Hollywood, there are soooo many unanswered questions. Maybe Spielberg expected the audience to know too much information from the book? The 'happy' ending was just BS in my whole mind. I will wait a few days to specifically point out the unanswered things just so I don't spoil it for anyone.

You haven't read the book? That changes alot....I've read it, it's a great classic - H.G Wells was the master....So great if the bad ending is the same as what happens in the book - That won't bother me. (The ending wasn't all that bad in the book)...

I agree the book didnt have that bad of an ending. I havnt seen the movie yet but i hope the ending of the movie follows the book.

If you are looking for big final scene all-out war to the death, then the ending (Assuming it's the same in the book) will seem 'pretty gay' to you.

Some very minor spoilers in the first paragraph.

The problem is some people want everything laid out for you on screen with an ending that ties everything together in a nice neat little package. A good director will let you see what you need to see, and let your imagination fill in what happens behind the scenes. You don't need to know what happens all the time with the military, you don't need to know the scientific reasoning behind the bacteria and red grass. You don't need to see every country duking it out with these aliens.

You need to appreciate the direction Spielberg took with this film, becuase the formula you want to see is a formula that has been used a million times, and is so unoriginal that movie audiences do not want to go to the movies anymore. Box office numbers are at a record low, which is suprising to me because the entire decade of the 90's turned out some of the worst peaces of shit films every to grace celluloid.

Part of it was Spielberg's fault, though not in a bad way. When Jurassic Park came out in 1993, audiences were blown away. The combination of action, adventure, and special effects created a thousand carbon copies that were hollow and unoriginal through out the last decade. CGI became the new standard, replacing character development and story.

Maybe it will take Spielberg's War of the World's and Nolan's Batman to show movie executives that big blockbuster movies can be made with style, character development, and story.

Not that War of the World's is a perfect movie, but it's definitely the best movie this year in my opinion, and the best movie Spielberg has made since Schindler's List.
