Car Decision -
07-16-2005, 11:16 PM
Well, as time gets closer to the '07 Shelby GT-500, i'm getting a lil' apprehensive about actually getting the car. You see, the problem is many. Price is not yet set, production #'s aren't known either, and exactly what the car will look like is also a mystery. As some of you know, Arkan plunked down a deposit back in March just to be able to order this car. I'm currently #4 on the list at that particular dealership. If they only get 3 cars, i'm out. So, all of that got me thinking about another car "solution". You see, i currently have a car and truck for daily transportation so this car is just a toy. I always wanted a perfectly restored American Muscle car but they are very very expensive now a days. I currently have 2 such cars but they need alot of work to bring them to "showroom" condition and to be quite frank, it'll end up costing me as much as the new mustang. So, Arkan came up with another idea. How about building myself the ultimate street machine?
Only 6 real cars exist in the world today and i never even saw a custom built one let alone an "original". What car you ask? Well, none other that the 1965 Cobra Daytona Coupe.

When complete, this car will be entirely "brand new" costing me about as much as the Shelby GT-500 Mustang.

Both cars will satisfy my needs, be brand new, and cost about the same. Only difference will be i'd have to assemble the Coupe and it won't be completed for another couple of years! So, thats my current dilema in toy land. Only time will tell which car will be parked in my garage.
Don't ask me why i felt like posting this.....guess i need to see my reasoning out in the open.
Opinions welcomed.

I vote for the '65 Cobra. As you said, it would take more time and effort than buying a new '07 GT-500, but I think that would allow you to enjoy it that much more and be proud of what you put into it.

here's the thing. Will your wife allow you to work on and store the car in the garage for years? Or will she go into a pissy fit? Just something to think about.

If I were you and I knew what I was doing, I would definetly build the 65 daytona. You would so much more satisfaction out of building the car instead of buying a new Ford which in you don't even know if you can get it or what it will look like.
Definetly go with the 65 Daytona.

If they only get 3, do you get your deposit back?
I'd say if you don't, get the '07. If you do, get the Shelby. I LOVE Shelbys. My uncle owns one and it is nothing but heaven. [Not the coupe, his is convertible.]

Ok, as for the lady in my life, doesn't matter. The 2 car garage is mine and has been since i purchased this house in '98. She has a shed for her stuff.
And yes, i get my deposit back if i can't get the Shelby. The Shelby is my 1st choice since it will already be built and it's recognized as an authentic shelby in the Shelby Registry. Mustang will be worth more than the '65 Daytona. But....i will build the Daytona "if" i can't get the shelby.
But, if you had both cars infront of me and asked which i wanted, i'd opt for the Daytona. That car is just sick!! No other words to explain it. I had the pleasure of driving a Shelby Cobra

and i could only imagine what driving a coupe would be like.

Build it, thatd be 100x better telling people "Yea, I built it" then... "yea I bought that" just like everyone else. But thats only if you have the time.
What are the other 2 cars that you have that are yet to be restored?

Build the Daytona, you'll have a fuzzy feeling inside and a picasso looking car, but you still would have the fuzzy feeling.

As fellow person who would love to fix an old car to like new condition i say 65 cobra.
A: Its fucking stunning.
B: Its still a cobra.
C: If you dont fix it, it will die away.
D: Everyone will have a Mustang that looks somewhat similar to a gt-500, where as a 65 coupe is a rarity.
E: Its fucking stunning.
F: Doing the work yourself is rewarding once your done.
G: It will be alot more fun to drive than an 07 gt-500.
Ditch the 07 and bring back a classic. If you start this year, you may have it done in late 07 early 08. Putting it near your gt-500 time table.
