Calling out car audio guys! -

I have a Sony CDXMP70 in my car right now. Pretty advanced looking (and expencive ed: ) but I think my laser is toast. If I clean it the CD's might work for a little bit then I just get disk read error no matter what I put in, mp3 or CD. Is their any way to just replace the laser? The deck is worth $500 new and still sounds great so I don't want to toss it.

You cant just replace the laser, no. You can send it in to sony for cleaning. If you bought in like CC or BB, just go in and ask them about it.

Well, if you have a decent local shop (and you have no warrenty left), then they can take it apart, clean it etc. (My local shop owner does orders from all over ontario though...so not many places do it. Other then that get your warrenty handy and go back to the retailer. IF possible return it for a better deck. Sony = garbage period. Alpine, Pioneer Premier, JVC Arsenal, Planet Audio and Eclispe = the only head units i trust, and even then my preference is almost always Alpine.
EDIT. ACTAULLY. You live in Ontario. biggrin: IF you still have warrenty, my biggest recommendation is to try and take it back if possible. Pop down to Orangeville and take a listhen to my installers 71 Mini GT. I promise you it will blow you off your feet. (not loud wise, but the perfect sound enviroment it creates inside. Worst comes to worse, pop down and he will have it fixed for you. If it just needs cleaning then it can be done in a day or 2. If it needs parts it takes much much longer. I can bring you buy him if you want. Most people in Ontario end up sending all their repairs to him anyways. I was once a non beleiver about HU's beleiving all were made eqaul, it is simply not true.

Sony decks are not garbage at all, that is the one bright point these days for sony, their new amps will do rated power aswell, but their subs and speakers leave something to be desired.

Great thanks for the offer. We have a big store down here called Crow river sound (you may have heard of it? it became kind of famous for its workers who drive ricer cars and park them out-front) Il try and go there just because its closer but if they want to charge me insane amounts or can't fix it il try to hook up with you or something but id rather not go that route as Orangeville is on the far side of Toronto and over 200km which is quite a distance. IL stop in tomorrow on spare and see what they have to say. It’s good to know that there are some good audio guys on here.

Everyone tells me sony decks are crap all the time. I had bought one and installed it in my moms neon a good 5 years ago and it has never given us a problem. I must admit, this deck that im trying to fix, it is really cool looking. I get comments on it all the time. It also does sound great so I can't really complain about it aside from it not playing CD's anymore.

Sony=Crap is a huge misconception that started when their xplode line went to crap like 4 or 5 years ago. Their subs have never been that good, or any of their speakers for that matter. Their amps used to be quite overrated, but they have gotten that act together in the last 2 years. Their decks have always been very reliable for the most part, with their higher end decks being on par with any alpine or pioneer. Their mid 90s decks were argueably their best, many SQ competitors still swear by them to this day.

My house stereo is a Sony its 12 years old and still kicking good, heard for there money they were best back in early 90's. thats what a few electronic repairmen said, they are very well built. better than jvc, ext, for its price class. but thats home not car. cant see them making cheap car radios though. didnt even know they made speakers lol, ill stick with my klipsh and paridigm sub. for house that is.
I cheap bazoka subs and amps for car but they sound good and are very loud. under rated in my book.
