Default Adaptive antialiasing for ati users - 09-29-2005, 03:09 PM

Pretty nice little thing that was found hidden in the 5.9 ati drivers, it enables antialliasing of 2d parts of games, like tree elaves or some of thosechainlink fences you come across in cs source.

to enable it you have to change this setting (highlighted) to 0 in the registry

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gerald.mar ... aptive.jpg

You then get the option in the cat control center, or you can dload ati tray tools and it'll show up in that.

Its located under :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\Video

Pretty nice difference for nothing:

NO fsaa

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gerald.mar ... nd0002.jpg

6x fsaa

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gerald.mar ... nd0004.jpg

6x adaptive fsaa

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gerald.mar ... nd0003.jpg

Put the screens to fullsize to see the difference.

Swiped from here http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24069

ignore the "create reg entry" part you just have to modify it.

Edit fixed last pic to proper screen.

So it's the same thing as Nvidia's transparent AA? That's cool.

Any performance loss?

mm not really sure yet, ive only tried taking a couple of screens. From the bits and pieces ive read at beyoned 3d it appears to be supersampling fsaa.

Tried running the source stress test

1280x1024 6xfsaa (regular) 16x aniso 115.77fps

1280x1024 6xfsaa (adaptive) 16x aniso 115.13fps

Then again the source test is for shaders, not much 2d stuf in it. Kinda hard thing to benchmark as well seeing as its only has an effect on alpha textures or anything 2d.

A bit of performance loss since the cards doing more work, when you do the registry thing you get an option in the control center to enable it. Just set your fsaa setting 2-4or 6 then check the adaptive tab.

You can use ati tray tools if you want

http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/

then you get this

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/ ... ps/yay.jpg

tray tools is handy beacuse when you go to edit this in the reg the numbers for the driver install vary, so if you install try tool and clic on the system setting it shows you the registry string to follow to enable it.

It'll be a bit different for each registry, in this pic here

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gerald.mar ... aptive.jpg

you can see after "video" theres 4 folders, each with a bunch of random numbers, the setting will be in one of those. Just use the +\- to go through em. Thats assuming you;re using catalyst 5.9
