Default PC to Mac - 04-14-2006, 04:09 AM

Anyone have experience transfering indesign/quark/illustrator/photoshop etc files between mac and pc?

Is it much of a hassle? I'm going to have to be doing this because I can't afford to buy a mac for use at home...

I only have Photoshop experience. Haven't had a problem opening PC-created .psd files on a Mac and vice versa.

theyll open on both and it doesnt matter what platform they were created on.

the problem youll have is with fonts not opening on both ... for instance, you might make something on the mac and use the font "times", then try to open it on the pc and its called "times new roman" ... same face different name.

so if all your fonts are for pc and you create your documents on the pc , the fonts arent going to be right , or even there, on the mac. unless you have the font for both platforms ( the names will still be differnt tho and the mac version will have to be adjusted ).

: ive been working with 300 dpi images on both mac and pc lately and ive noticed that the mac is much more stable with multiple documents open. my pc (3.2 ghz) has the tendency to hang and is much less responsive with multi 300 dpi images open across applications. the mac ( at 1.42 ghz ) runs much smoother.

There's absolutely no doubt that Macs handle graphic creation/manipulation better.

Still, it's not enough for me to use a Mac on a regular basis.

Try networking in a buisness with those danm things... SUCH a fucking pain in the ass. I find Mac's really only handle movie editing much better. I find no difference at all between my 3200 + at home and the dual 1.6ies (Macs) @ the design lab on my Campus. (yes i work on many print peices ranging from 150 dpi to 300 dpi, cmyk colour yadda yadda.

i notice a difference.

and as far as networking goes, i use mine networked and there are some quirks, but for the most part all seems good. printing from one thru the other seems to be a bit of a hassle tho. setting up networking between the two of them was pretty painless tho.

most every thing on the mac works ... it just does.

i have a theory tho. with the WIDE variety of both hardware and software made for the pc, i imagine that it would be virtually impossible to insure compatibility among them all. which results in pc hardware/software not being as stable as most mac hardware/software.

: the super long load times for loading 300dpi images has forced me to move from my pc to my mac. i was having to wait 30 to 60 seconds at least for one image to render in indesign on my pc; the mac rendering is instant, no matter what the file size / resolution. ( laptop mind you ).

maye one , but try 10 or more ... with indesign, photoshop, and illustrator all running in the background with images opened in them as well. this all at 300dpi ( where one file can be as large as 50 to 100 mb ). in the document i was just working on there are at least 10 300dpi images in at at scale (4x5 in and larger). My pc cant handle it for some reason. My little 1.42 ghz laptop can however. dunno. sure theyll open and be usable, but it takes WAY too long for them to open while on my mac the same files at the same sized open instantly.
