[quote:42e2b]KFC siege man now in custody
(Filed: 07/06/2006)

A suspected car thief involved in a 20-hour rooftop stand-off with police has finally been arrested.

Officers had been in pursuit of Barry Chambers, 27, when he left the vehicle he was driving and climbed up a drain pipe at 2am yesterday.

He then refused to come down from the three-storey property in Gloucester city.

Police cordoned off the area in Midland Road as Mr Chambers dismantled a chimney and hurled bricks at officers and passers-by.

Residents had to be moved from nearby houses for their own safety as the situation became increasingly dangerous.

Police later surprised residents by sending a fried chicken takeaway to the suspected criminal.

Mr Chambers was first given a pack of cigarettes and a can of Pepsi, but the drink was refused and a two-litre bottle was demanded instead. Minutes later, he tucked into a family-sized KFC meal.

David Dalton, who runs a nearby guest house, said: "I couldn't believe it when I saw the police sending up a takeaway and cigarettes.

"Surely they should have been starving him out - not giving him food and drink so he can stay up there as long as he likes.

"But no, they used the hydraulic platform to take a KFC meal, a two-litre bottle and a packet of fags."

Gloucestershire Police said that, although he was being "a nuisance", they still had to look after his well-being and human rights.

The stand-off ended at 9.40pm last night when specialist negotiators finally persuaded the man to give himself up as a large crowd of spectators cheered.

He is now being questioned at a local police station.
