I actually did agree with him on the statement that the word is seriously overhyped these days. I hear more whites using it as a mockery of its original use than I hear blacks using it.

The word itself originated because white rednecks were too stupid to pronounce "Ne-groes" properly so they just butchered the syllable and you have the word.

Despite popular belief, race relations are very lax around the SE USA, at least with the normal crowd. You still have a lot of splinter racist groups who hide in the shadows, but the guys around the univ. don't give a fuck about the "N word" at all. The black friends I have don't give a fuck about it, and it's common knowledge amongst blacks here that those who do use n*gga or n*gger are pretty much morons trying to look hard by sepereating themselves from normal culture to create their own sub-culture and society.

I played football in HS, and the black guys on the team didn't use the word. A few did, the wannabe-gangsters, but that's the only sub-group among African-Americans who use it these days from my experiences. Most guys just say, "sup man" just like the rest of us do. And that's a good thing: the less you divide yourself from other groups, the less susceptible you make yourself to racist or stereotypical thoughts. You're seeing a strong morph of friends and cultures between whites and blacks now in the southern states, making the word obsolete.

gt, I know you're from AL as well, and I know you went to Hoover High School. I didn't go to Hoover, but I know the division between whites and blacks that still exists very heavily in high school. I've seen the division of the color line since entering college. I believe the reason is that a lot of African-Americans realize that by trying to look hard, by trying to walk, talk, and act a certain way to become accepted by their peers, they've distanced themselves from other people, because it's not a normal act. You may say that's innacurate, and the gangsta sub-culture or whatever term you want to coin for it is merely the culture of blacks.

I don't buy that for a second. The black guys on my football team, and consequently the black guys on the track team that I was on (I was the only white guy on the team BTW), when seperated from the pressure of trying to mold themselves into what society has expected them to, completely breaks the stereotype, and suddenly the "ghetto" accent and phrases disappear. This tells me that by trying to buy into the gangsta sub-culture, it is in fact an unnatural way of presenting yourself in public, because why would these mannerisms disappear when not with that particular group? You wouldn't look at a white guy who is being a "wigger" and view that as normal. Why, then, should it be normal for a black guy?

Again, I've seen that college destroys sub-cultures in our society. This applies not only to the gangsta mentality, but also that of the rebel/redneck/confederate flag cuture, complete with its own mannerisms and idiosyncracies. I see whites and blacks eating with each other, hanging out at the bars on the strip, and, there's a complete breakdown of "white" and "black" clothing styles. Girls dress like girls; guys dress like guys. There's no longer identification of who's a "black" and who's a "white" judging from clothing styles.

This is not to say that whites and blacks do not still hang out with their own race. Indeed, there are still all black fraternities and sororities. It's human nature to hang out with people of your own race, because it's comfortable, it's something you can relate with. Just like a 1st grade boy wouldn't want to hang out with girls. There's a lesser connection with girls than guys at any age, just as there is with respective races. But the dissipation of sub-cultures, which has gotten rid of the use of the words n*gga and n*gger for the most part, is the only way that racism and stereotypes can be truly minimized.

well im here to tell you..chronic diarrhea that those guys who suddenly lost their accents and manerisms are just fakers. If you can go from talking ghetto one day and then the next... not, then thats not who you are at all. If you want to viewed as an intelligent person with a brain on his/her shoulders then do it. Work harder in school, adjust your appearance abit. . Now, in certain situations you'd like to tone down your 'ghettoness' (eg; job interviews, school presentations..basically when representing yourself to a larger audience) but if it's not who you are 100% of the time, then your fake.

Let me tell you a little bit about me. First, my name is Patrick. Second, i dont fit any of your usual "black stereotypes". Reasons for this? Hmm, maybe its because i was raised by a strong group of people unlike many of my 'brothas' out there who grow up with a single mom and the dad is usually missing from the home. Or maybe it's because i went to an 95% white middle school/high school. Maybe even destined to be me? who knows...

Grew up in a 60/40 diverse neighborhood with a single parent. Fuck the bullshit the "political correct" people spew on us. Bottom line is....you are who you are. Had a shit load of black friends and puerto rican friends and we called each other all sorts of names but.....at the end of the day, it didn't matter. We were friends and that was that. Don't believe the "hype"......most whites don't give a fuck. 'Tis a shame some people can't see that.

I use the english language freely around all my friends and "n****r" just happens to be one of those words. My black friends don't care when i say it, they just know the person that i am. No big fucking deal.

I hate some blacks, puerto ricans, and whites just the same. I don't give a fuck about the pigments in your skin. If you're an asshole, i'm gonna dislike you.

lol @ goose comment. The whole team is garbage imo except #99. When he was in middle school a bud of mine and i encouraged him to stay in school and keep playing football. We practiced with him a few times and everything. He heeded*, our advice and now he's starting DT for them now rock: We called him 'freight'.

But yeah i played under that that coaching staff but honestly, i didn't like fat, white, out of shape coaches telling me how to do my damn job so i quit (that and i loved talking to white girls on my school bus ).
