Techno -
02-25-2007, 10:29 PM
I'm starting to get curious about the whole techno genre. I know there's some sweet techno clubs in Europe that I'd love to visit. (side note)
But um, I wanted to know what is some good techno songs/dj's/groups that you know of? Cascada is a huge in the US and that's more of pop-techno. I just want to get to listen to as much as possible.
For my digital audio class I'm going to try to attempt to create a techno song. There's pretty much a "formula" or form for techno songs like any other genre. Classical has sonata form and all that junk. There're forms to american marches. There are forms to jazz charts. For example, you know there are a lot of techno songs that have a section where the bass cuts out, the melody/higher amplitudes are focused....then, there's a silence of 1 beat and the bass comes in with the melody again full throttle. You all know what I'm talking about.
I just want to learn by listening to other songs. So any suggestions, post em here.

What kind of Techno exactly. The Genre is actually Dance. In that genre there are several categories.
- Techno,
- Trance,
- Hard House
- Many more
All depends what category you want to listen to. I usually listen to Trance, when it comes to dance music.
Get yourself listening to DJ tiesto (one of my fav dj's) - adiago for strings you'll have heard of, clockwork orange is a good track, Carl Cox is a well known dj.
I'll finish later - i'm off to work now

techno is actually dance? i think you're only seeing the dance half of electronica from the genres you listed. coleman, there's tons and tons of shit out there. it's hard to recommend you something. basically, do you want catchy dance shit or do you want relaxed and laid back shit? or do you want your brain to explode?

pretty much. Yeah its actually categoriesed as dance. However I was in a rush for work, and couldnt really go into too much detail. All depends exactly what type of music you want to look into.
More sub genre's:
House,
Trance,
Electronic,
disco,
electro,
hardcore,
chillout,
ambiant
garage
Then to make things alot more confusing, there are sub categories within these: Hard trance, electro funk, hard house, and much, much more. I'm not going into large lists.

Strange they have listed the genre as electronic. Most people I know class the genre as dance.

(lol @ dereksaudio. If you guys don't know where those files are from you should all be ashamed of yourself!....ps I did the whole tube-radio effect. I didn't use the one that actually came like that in the game files)

edit: Pos' link should be helpful for newbies
I could give you a list of artists you might dig lolman, I've kind of played a few mini-sets at a local bar in Newcastle and people generally loved stuff I played.
Try to stay away from anything to do with Ministry of Sound and Hed Kandi as they're the absolute pits, only made by morons for morons. But of course only you can decide what you like.
Depends what you mean by techno, as its only the media and the pop charts that consider techno as being all electronic music.
However its generally got its own style, its a relentless beat, with pounding beats, its minimal stuff. Sets can go on for hours. Detroit is the best known for its techno.
Electro's getting ripped off alot in the charts now by the hed kandi/ministry producers who want to make a quick buck but theres an immense amount of great electro.
Anyway I'll stop blabbering and give you some myspace artist links, coz they've got tracks on there so you can make up your own mind:
Jimmy Edgar (jazzy bassy stuff)
http://www.myspace.com/colorstrip
Milanese (this guys music may scare you)
http://www.myspace.com/milanese1
Frivolous (jazzy bassy electro)
http://www.myspace.com/58824169
may add some later if you want....
p.s - at only 11.3mb, try his mix out, its glorius and has a wide range of tracks for ya! [url=http://www.datassette.net/music/datashat--tres_tourist_megamix.mp3:32b77]MP3 LINK HERE[/url:32b77]
