I didn't know subs could take out helos, still dunno if they are bs'ing or not though. Pretty cool if it is true. rock:

BTW Dippers= helicopters, for a helicopter to find & track a submarine they must hover, then drop a dipping sonar. The sonar is lowered into the ocean & through the different temperatures in order to try & pic up any sound given away by the submarines propellor.

kinda of a 1 in a million shot and a strange way of shooting them down. Nearby where I live is the Brunswick Naval Station. I know a few of the fellas who service the aircraft there. the planes fly missions out into the ocean searching for subs. they have these huge 4 prop planes with a giant "penis" sticking out the back. Penis was the airman's nomenclature...not mine. Its looks more like a spike thrusting out the back but he says that is all of the sensistive radar equipment they use to spot and track subs.

not sure why some countries would use helis to spot subs....

There's a number of ways to find a sub, prop aircraft & helos can drop sonar bouys to find it & helos usually drop the dipping sonar which they can monitor as it sinks through the ocean. I guess it's handy for helos to use them as they can fit on the back of a frigate & be used where-ever the ship is rather than having to call on an aircraft carrier or land based aircaraft.

The Gizmos you saw on the prop aircraft were probably magnetic anomaly detectors (MAD). As subs travel through the earths magnetic field they create a magnetic anomaly because the submarine sturcture is made up of iron, this magnetic stuff is picked up by the MAD equiptment. The red, Russian, commie, bastrds countered this by making a sub out of titanium cuss: Interesting stuff...
