Default Paintball Tips - 08-17-2007, 10:14 AM

So, it looks like the guys in engineering wanna organize a paintball game in late September. I am ALL over that!

Never played before, though, so I'm looking for some tips regarding a few things:

1. Attire.
What should I buy to wear? Anything that is particularly effective in taking the sting out of hits? Should I go camo?

2. Strategy.
Are the games usually free-for-alls or is there any opportunity for strategy? I'd love for it to be a fire-and-maneuver/flanking game.

Anything else I should know?

For your clothing, don't worry too much about it. Honestly, you're going to feel the sting when you get hit. It doesn't hurt as much as they say, but you'll feel it. Wear pants and long sleeve shirt. Regular pair of shoes should work too. If you have cleats, all the better, especially if you're playing on a paintball field and it's soaked with paint and shells.

As far as your strategy is going to go, it's nothing like a war movie or any of that bs. Best bet is to stretch out before hand, because you're going to be moving around alot and crouching. You can outflank people and such, but most of the fighting is going to be you and other people just kind of spraying at each other trying to get in the hit. Also, don't be afraid to rush people and try to bunker them. Just remember to keep moving and not stay in one spot / cover for too long.

butters is right in clothing. you don't need to gear up, i sometimes wear short sleeve shirts. yeah they hurt when you get hit but you want to be freely comfortable in your movements.

there's a few types of strategy games you'll probably play. i think it's rare for a free for all. capture the flag is the biggest, or defender/offender. cover the satellite, make sure no one hits it; that sorta thing.

i've found that in larger ares, people don't often rush when in a fire fight. you'll go back and forth, you shoot he ducks, he shoots you duck. when it's your turn to shoot just book it ot the other side of his object and keep firing. eventually you'll get a hit. not a lot o fpeople expect someone to go rambo on them so it works to your advantage.

another thing i've found to work is when you're in a firefight both using objects for cover, it's typical shoot a bunch, he ducks, you shoot a bunch, he ducks, etc. instead of that set yourself up so you aren't in the original position you've been in as he's been trying to hit you. angle yourself so you're barely showing but you can get a shot off. wait for him to peer out and he'll set himself up to shoot you when you're supposed to pop back out. take a shot and make sure it's a hit.

i play larger fields, so these might not work in speedball.

wear pink so you can wipe hits off easier.

From the few times I went paintballing I usually found it best to buddy up with someone, or on occassion go off & do your own thing. First time I split from my squad & went off on my own. I used all the cover I could & got behind the attacking squad & wiped out about 4 of them when I came at them from behind. happy:

Paintballing is best thing! But I'd love to try re-enactment paintballing or airsoft rock:

my #1 quick tip: When you see an enemy running across from you, lead him about 10 feet and shoot a constant stream of paintballs, thus making it sort of a paintball wall he will run into.

shoot until they call out and expect people to play dirty... especially if you're playing tournament ball. my family and i used to run our own paintball field/proshop setup down here just off the highway, we had a speed ball field and a woods course and really and truly as i sat there in my dye jerseys and apparel i was jealous of the guys just wearing jeans and a shirt, they looked so comfortable. :-(

I wear cammo, mostly cause its loose fitting, so alot of energy is absorbed by the fabric. Most field rules are "no break, no out". So i wear it to get alot of bounces. Plus it is pretty comfortable and fairly cheap, since sometimes the paint does actually stain.

It really depends on what type of paintball you are intending to play. I was reallly into paintball during high school, had top of the line gear, decked out in our sponsors gear etc. I got bored of it, and I wasnt a fan of practicing twice a week and spending $30 a case on paint, even though our sponsorship covered most of the cost. During my senior year after I started to get out of it, my friends went to PSP World Cup in Orlando and placed 4th in 5 man rookie, it was quite cool. Woodsball is ALOT of fun, although I rarely played it...paintballs dont hurt too much, if kids keep their speed to sub 300 fps
