Default Performance Tips Here!!! - 08-29-2002, 06:35 PM

If you've already set your game video settings to the bare minimum, check to see if there are any excess services running.

Here are a couple of great links that'll walk you through the whole process.

XP Service decriptions and dependencies can be found at:

http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm

Suggested configurations for tuning internet gateway and gaming systems can be found at:

[url:9abd9]http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm[/url:9abd9]

If you've done this and still have performance issues, try the following:
Choose your network card: [url:9abd9]http://www.tweakdatabase.com/tweakdatabase/tweakdb_display.aspx?id=822&des=Stop%20Jerkey%20Gr aphics[/url:9abd9]
Disable Zip Drives: [url:9abd9]http://www.tweakdatabase.com/tweakdatabase/tweakdb_display.aspx?id=1137&des=Stop%20jerky%20gr aphics.%20The%20alternative%20way.[/url:9abd9]

I have no idea what video card you're using, nor did you state which drivers are installed and I don't particularly care.

I'm assuming you've updated virus scanning software and run a full system scan prior and also defragged your drive/drives prior to changing too many funky settings. If not, I'd highly advise doing so since systems seldom slow down for no reason. You did say that things were working fine prior to your vacation.

Okay... so you've changed from Network issues (ping) to video card/directX/OpenGL tweaking...

I'd suggest visiting both of the following sites:

[url:50f1d]http://www.guru3d.com/[/url:50f1d]

Try this: [url:50f1d]http://gamershq.madonion.com/articles/3dmarktips/?page=3[/url:50f1d]

Yah, I use the XP Tweak at home. I finally was able to turn off QoS (Quality of Service) with it. This is a built-in program in Windows that takes 15% of your connection and dedicates it to Microsoft for Automatic updates.

Yeah... I did that one too... I haven't noticed any huge improvement on that alone, but it's one less service running in the background.
