WIN XP -
09-25-2002, 11:29 AM
Heres the situation: I have WinXP installed on this PC and on my laptop. I just put together a computer for my sister. It needs an OS. From what I've heard about XP, it seems like I won't be able to install the same copy on her system. Is this true? Do I need to go buy another copy? I'm going over to her house tonight to install all this stuff. THANKS!!

Once again another useless response by Gerard, member of the infamous wall of idiots. Here is an explanation for you.
It is illegal to use the same software on more then one PC because, when you purchase the software, you are agreeing to the license agreement. The agreement states that you do not actually own the software, you are actually just leasing the software for use on one and only one PC. Because software companies don't give out their source code, you are actually only purchasing the object program. You never actually own the whole program which is a funny thing isn't it?
When you install the program, you uae the unique key to register your copy with the company (you don't have to register, but you do need to use the key). If you use that key on another pc running the same copy you bought (or downloaded), you are breaking the user agreement...which is illegal. This is all part of the copyright. So, if you wanted to install the same OS on multiple PC's, you have to purchase more keys from the software company. Of course, it is impossible to detect if you are using the software on multiple PC's unless they are 1) connected to the internet, in which case , ex.. microsoft CAN actually detect what key you are using 2) you register your illegal copy with the company.
There is the explanation for why it is illegal, class dismissed.

And once again i'll tell you to shut the fuck up.
It may be ilegal but so is bringing dvd's into school and allowing other people to watch them. Recording movies from tv and doing the same thing is illegal but everyone does it so wtf is the difference.
You honestly think people have a copy of xp sitting there and just to give microcunt more money for a serial number theyre gonna run out and buy another copy ?? If you think that you obviously live on another fucking planet.
Fact is software companies are looking for the distributors of warez rather than the people that use it, The way you're talking its as if as soon as the winxp cd touches the laptop cd drive the fucking fbi is gonna kick down the door.
Theres probably more people using hacked and warezed versions of windows than there are using legit copies.

Gerard next time read my post instead of fucking quoting it and posting your usual non informative crap. I gave an explanation to why it's illegal, not what my opinion of what would happen if you did used it on multiple machines. Now get your lazy ass off the PC for a few minutes and do something constructive, instead of waiting around for new posts so you can give another useless statement. I don't know how old you are but you act like a friggin 12 year old...if you are, well then that makes sense. But if you're older it's just sad.

Well, this topic is pretty pointless, since if you got the Retail version of XP, you will be forced to register the damn thing with Microsoft. Of course you CAN waste one of your "restarts", if you are so inclined, but if you ever need to reformat, that doesn't benefit you.

Actually, I thought the posts were pretty dumb.
The only XP OS that you can install more than once is Windows XP: Corporate Edition. You can install this copy 6000 times. Home and Pro have the OS Activation feature, where you have to connect to MS's systems to confirm your copy is legit. If you really wanted to, you can call them, and reset the activation, so you can activate it again. This is legal.
