I thought this might make a nice serverside mod. It might hurt a little bit those ppl with crap vid cards but it didn't hurt my fps at all.

No fog. Imagine that...lifting the unrealistic curtain of fog snipers have such an unrealistic advantage hiding behind.

No folks....it's serverside so you might as well forget trying to cheat with it.

I like the idea. And I would not have an issue with FPS. But how much of a FPS killer is it?

What was your FPS with fog then without.

I'm not sure I see what this is good for. Not putting it down or anything, just wondered if you might explain a little.

I guess thats one way to beat the cheaters, put the same mod on the server so everyone has the same advantage (wall hacks, curtain hacks etc), hehe.
Interesting effect, let us know how it affects fps.

52.1 and 50.6 respectively @ 1280x1024 32bit color (both color settings) and every other setting as high as it would go. (at the moment the screenshot was taken)

As you can see both pictures are taken from the exact same perspective, so all things being equal it is fairly safe to assume that a 4% hit in FPS might result. Then again since FPS fluxuates to a degree, the FPS drop could be simple coincedence. I imagine the FPS hit would be even lower %-wise the lower the resolution although I have not confirmed this.

I think the end of the road (german sniping house) looks far more realistic without the fog. I mean after all we're only talking about 200 yards or so figuratively.

What's it good for? Visual realism perhaps? I know mohaa is just a game. A lot of people mock what it lacks in realism. I however am NOT a gamer in the least but I love simulators. I grew out of video games 15 years ago but to me mohaa isn't a game but rather a combat simulator that tries its best to emulate combat.

You see I personally like the idea because I go out of my way to make mohaa as realistic as is possible. I prefer realism ala CKR. I prefer FF on because anything else is bullshit....although mature people on an FF-on server is hard to find. I don't use avatars (even WITH FF on) so if I shoot you accidently...well that's realistic too. Normally I use the version of my Kleen-Screen hud mod that only shows ammo in reserve and NOT how much is in the clip still. This too is realistic because you can't see THROUGH a clip to see how much ammo is inside of it. ie: 20/180 (bullets) would only be shown as 180 leaving me to count how many rounds I let off per burst of gunfire. I don't use the compass with its damage indicator (red pie slice thingy that shows direction you just got shot from) because this too is total bullshit.

I just want to tweak the game to make it as realistic as possible and this is just one more way to increase my pleasure. :)

That one doesn't look like it's all the way off, try $world farplane 0 instead of 10000 or whatever it is for that pic. A farplane setting of 0 duplicates the r_farplane_nofog 1 cheat conditions. BTW- don't be suprised to see something like this in DMz Dogtag eventually, it's been on my to-do list but definately after detecting the list of cheat cvar settings. I also tried it the other way awhile back, for example you can't force a farplane setting on a r_farplane_nofog 1 client, and can't change the cvar itself since it's "cheat protected", just like a few other ones they slipped up on.

Well if someone's cheating without fog what difference does it make if I tried forcing no fog on them? Same result either way or am I misunderstanding something here?

Farplane 0 vs farplane 10000+. Does it really look any different?

"That one doesn't look like it's all the way off, try $world farplane 0 instead of 10000 or whatever it is for that pic."

What do you mean by "far off"?

Pardon my ignorance but I ask you because you seem to know more about it.

As far as doing similar in Dogtagz...show me a modder who hasn't ripped another off....or at least borrowed a few lines of code.... heh heh.
Go nuts man.

TO THE READER::::

I might try it Dogmeat's way and call it version 2..lol... in the meantime version one is ready (with two versions...lol).

A couple people asked me in this thread how the lack of fog affected FPS performance. Well it's kind of funny really. On two maps (the hunt & the bridge/crossroads) I lost between 2-3 FPS....not that it matters much. On two other maps I gained FPS without the fog. On Destroyed Village I gained 1 FPS (in exact same spot/orientation on map) and on Remagen (only very light fog) I gained 2 FPS by eliminating it. (same spot/orientation) Overall you could say the performance issues are negligible.

See for yourself..... WARNING BIG JPEG's....you might want broadband. ;)

[url:22174]http://www.control-alt-delete.ca/mohaa/obj_team4-mohdm4_no_fog.jpg[/url:22174]

FPS is shown in these pictures for the viewer to decide the merits of this mod.

The mod comes in TWO VERSIONS. Since this mod and Dogmeat's map-fix mod both work off the same script file one mod would overrule the other. (whichever has the higher alphabetical name) So I made two versions. One WITH the Dogmeat map fixes built in. (includes ALL credits and files from the original... i borrow but I don't steal.) The other just has no fog WITHOUT any map fixes. (you CANNOT use dogmeat's map fix (stand alone version) and my mod together. You must use the combined mod to have both features working.

They can be downloaded from:

[url:22174]http://www.control-alt-delete.ca/mohaa/zzz_obj-dm_nofog.pk3[/url:22174]

OR

[url:22174]http://www.control-alt-delete.ca/mohaa/zzz_obj-dm_nofog_with_dogmeat_mapfix.pk3[/url:22174]

Oh.. one last thing. Take notice how much vivid color looks now. Even up close. (bridge pic a good example)

Idea's feedback and criticism are appreciated.

I mentioned trying it the other way, if someone was cheating I would force them to use the level's farplane info. This is what I meant I tried and did not work.

0 vs 10000 = Yes, quite a bit different in fact. Try both while zoomed in across the map.

[quote:6556c]"That one doesn't look like it's all the way off, try $world farplane 0 instead of 10000 or whatever it is for that pic."

Not far off, way off. I could tell you weren't using 0 since there was still fog.

Yeah its the same code basically, just wanted to give you a heads up. Actually I think mine is still cycling through farplane 0, 1000, 2000, ... 10000 every 10 seconds, that really lets you see the difference between the settings. Let me dig out a snippet you can try out.

[code:6556c]

setcvar "g_obj_axistext2" ""
setcvar "g_obj_axistext3" ""

setcvar "g_scoreboardpic" "mohdm2"

// call additional stuff for playing this map round based is needed

One thing you'll notice is no map fixes, that's because they have been moved out of the level's SCR files. So they will only directly confict on v1.6beta or earlier, and those using the newer v1.7beta need to watch how they configure it with whichever pak they choose, since they might spawn two vehicles on top of each other. Once an official release for DMz Dogtag comes out I'm going to be asking everyone to not integrate my fixes any longer since it won't be needed and will only confuse the issue. Thankfully there are only two or three mods that incorporate them so it shouldn't lead to too many admin headaches hehe.

I didn't bother to gamma adjust these, so they are a bit darker than they should be. You can still see the differences tho.

Ok I gotcha man.

I think for now I'll just leave it as is. All I wanted to do is make snipers a little more visible so they don't think they can hide 200 yards away with impunity. I hoped it might change the gameplay strategy a little bit for them.

I thank you for taking the time not only to explain it to me but also demonstrate it with the pictures. I know it's a real hassle....screenshot....convert to jpg....upload to webspace....post it here.

Thanks for the trouble you went through dogmeat.

np man, I do so much testing and such that it really didn't take long at all, digging the approporiate thread out of storage and making sure it worked by itself in the level SCR took more time than the screenshots actually.

I have an even better idea!!!!

WHY DONT EA FIX THE FUCKING GAME!!! SO PEOPLE CANT REMOVE THE FOG!!!!!! (and all the rest of the shite they havent done)

See EA are getting what they want, release an unfinished game, then get get us suckers to fix it for them!!! and we are so used to it... we dont even notice!!

Everyone on this forum should write to EA an insist on fixes for the game (finish it basically) or demand our money back!
