Default werid Thing about Stalingrad 2! - 10-12-2002, 08:46 PM

heey peeps!
is it me or?

when I starter a dedicated server with stalingrad 2.
and when peeople joins it. the game gets very laggy!
I mean If i'm playing on LAN! My ping sometimes goes high to 40 !!
that never happens when i play other maps like sount france, remagen etc.
only when i play stalingrad 2.

i also get low FPS!

and also forget to mention that tthe people who joins my server and playing stalingrad 2, will get their ping high above 100!
but as soon as i change map to france, everyone runs with 40-50 in ping again!!

anyone else with that problem??

Peace!

wow. its weird how someone else had the same problem as me.

i made the map in mind of the FPS concious folks out there.

whenever i played the map online after it released i would get really crappy ping, but everyone else didnt. then when maps changed, it would be fine again.

yet other people dont have this problem. i dont think its the netcode, but so far me and you are the only ones that have this problem.

i wish i knew what it was, as i would like to play my own map online once and awhile.

Default caulk.... - 10-13-2002, 10:29 AM

did you use caulk on the map? If you didnt, or even if you did, the engine is rendering the ENTIRE map, enve the parts you cant see..this combined with the general lag from the net can cause low FPS. And if you have those fans in the map (never played so i dunno) thats also gonna drop FPS. So, that could be the issue, but i never played the map..so i dunno...just shooting some ideas out.

Caulk is a texture the keeps the brush a solid but does not draw the surface.
You should always build your structures with caulk and then aplly the wanted texture to each side.
You only use textures on the sides that can be seen by a player while playing in game.
If you dont, the result will cause frame rate drops and removale of wanted surfaces.

say if you have a wall that butts against another wall, but you cant see the backside or top connections.
if you applied a texture to the whole brush on both, then as you play its drawing all sides of the brush even you do see them in game. This can cause frame drops.
Further more when 2 brushes intersect and all surfaces are drawn, the result will be even worse.
I construct all my structures with caulk first. Once the structure is complete I then texture each side visable but itself.

I only looked at his first version of the map. I noticed the laggy problem. I have not looked at any of the other versions. So I dont know how staligrad2 was built.

No it is not just you. I run a new maps server and this map had to come off the rotation because certain peoples pings would shoot through the roof. As soon a s the map changed it went back to normal. I run lots of new maps on the server and have only had this problem with this map. Too bad cause everyone really liked the map and would love to have a fixed version back

peace

Well I was reading lastnight on TMT forums
MPowell used the original map file to make the map. (converted .bsp with MOHTools to .map file)
I am willing to put money on it. Thats the problem right there.

MOHTools is nice to view some things, But I would never use it to make a conversion from it. All the maps origin dir. are blank when you convert.

I will have to further investigate the problem.

Frames-per-second has nothing to do with ping. The high ping is probably just from the ambience (maybe you messed up with it or something weird), because every one of your console commands needs to be sent to the server. And this little console thing pops up every second or so. I too have had this problem, even on LAN games. Strange... I'm just guessing it's the sound, but I'm probably wrong.

The same problem occurs with the tank battle maps. It will even boost some people's pings up to maxout and they will lagg incradibly until the map is changed back. I inquired about that problem (becuase that map(tank battle) would be great if you could actually play it) a while back and came up with the answers that it is entirely because of brush placements and texturing (ie not using caulk like you guys said). I was also told that a lot of mg42's, fog, lots of water, and moving vehicles will cause some pings to boost thru the roof. The ping problem is based on the fact that you have to send and receive and your system will try to receive too much while sending, thus producing high pings, and of course lag. I myself havnt played stali 2 either, but I've heard of this problem.

hey guys.

i did use caulk as much as possible. also what you are talking about FPS has nothing to do with ping.

just b/c its a converted map dosent mean it will be FUBAR. look at the BETA version of the map. didnt have this problem. only with Final version. so it cant be b/c its a converted map.

i'm strongly thinking about releasing an even better final version with a boatload of fixes.

ttyl.
