Default Volunteers for Compile??? - 01-05-2003, 02:06 AM

I can't seem to compile big maps for some reason, and I want kind of a test to see what I can do to finish it up. I need someone to compile my map that has actually published a their own to the public and can trust them not to plagurize it for themself.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Guy- you gotta realize that most of us are working on our own projects.
Compiling can take hours and sometimes days on large maps depending on your system and the construction of the map.
It eats up the processor and leaves almost nothing for other pc functions--basically rendering it useless because it is just too slow to use for anything else.
If I had a system dedicated to compiling only, I would do it for you. But I don't. I don't know that too many people will do this for you. As far as I'm concerned it's part of the mapping process. And long compiles help you to learn what mistakes you are making, and how to fix them. (The console is a good friend.)

You can do a non-vis compile for testing purposes. Since you won't compile the vis or light, your world willl be overbright, but at least you can get a feel for the placement of brushes and entities.
If you are using MBuilder, simply copy the .bsp file that it writes in the first step into dm if you are making MP non-obj map. You can then start your game and run your map from the maplist.

When you are satisfied, you can then do your full compile (that may take forever!).

One word of advice-- remove the .bsp from the dm folder before you compile again! Sometimes, it won't write the new file.

Good Luck

Thanks. Before all of this, I thought it was kind of abnormal compiling would take more than a day, so I didn't leave it on for the whole week. Now it'll show that compiling screen after u press "build it" or whatever and it lasts no longer than a second; I take a look for the bsp, and nothing has been done. It used to work for small maps, but now I think I'm just screwed. In the mean time I still have my dad's computer.

Btw, how do u take screenshots in radiant? I looked in the key binding thing in the help bar but there is nothing that is screenshot related.

For printing screens, if you have a grabber program installed, you hit the "print screen" key. Some systems have this ability from day 1. Others, like mine needed the program installed. Wingrab is a good one to get. Simple and easy.

As far as Radiant goes-- as soon as you press "Build It!", the compile process starts and it should write the .bsp and .prt files. If you have pauses set, when it says Press Any key to continue, just "x" out of it. and look in your map folder for your .bsp. Then either start it in dev mode from the console, or copy the .bsp into dm and test it from the game start menu.
