Default Good ping then Bad ping issue with Cable modem - 03-01-2003, 04:06 PM

I am not sure if this has ever come up, but thanks for any help.

I have cable, I connect to servers with < 100 ms ping. During play, sometimes my ping goes to 999. My performance suffers and every action is severely delayed. I was told by my cable provider to look at the following web site:

http://www.neotechcc.org/forum/online-g ... speeds.htm

I am sure that my upstream and downstream are not the same, but I do not know where in MOHAA I could tweak to a safe throughput to handle the difference they are suggesting.

I have tried other settings as far as what type of connection I have, but there is no difference.

If any of you have had this issue, I would appreciate ay info.

Thanks,

Dave

Is it possible that the servers you are playing on are generating this lag?

I have Comcast in Indianapolis, I have just recently (within the last couple of months) seen this issue pop up.

I am not for sure if it could be the servers, I tend to play only on those that have a low initial ping, and when I check during the game (until the issue rears its ugly head) I tend to have <100.

Also, the automated kick thing is in affect for most that I play, since I see the console message every so often.

Thanks again.

Dave

Default PING PROBLEM - 03-02-2003, 01:48 PM

it might be you at all. i run a small server and if my connection suffers a loss everybodys ping goes to 999 and the room is cleared by autokick. any number of things could cause your ping to go up that have nothing to do your computer or your connection.

I kinda figured it to be something I am going to have to live with. Sure makes playing frustrating though.

Thanks for all your comments and input, it is great to know that people are out there to help. I hope sometme I can return the favor.

I myself am a Tech Guy for WZG, I have had no complaints from anyone in the Forums or Emails, that they have high pings and or problems with Tech Support, WZG has lots of potential.

This post is a good reason to check out my tracert guide at MOHadmin.com

Go here http://www.mohadmin.com/nuke/modules.ph ... age&pid=11

This is a guide on the tracert command. This will help you find out how many "hops" their are between you and your game server.

The Internet is made up of a bunch of smaller networks connected to each other. One of those networks could be causing your a problem.

Read my guide for more info .

On a side note.

Your upload and download have nothing to do with pings

Those speeds represent how fast you can download bit's or bytes of data once you make that connection.

With online games you make many connections every second. If their is any delay (latency) you will start to see lag.

When your downloading a file, you don't notice that 1/100th of a second it takes to make the connection, all you see is how fast your bits/bytes are getting to your computer once it has made that connection.

It is true that your pings do go up to 999 when the map changes. this is why autokick will check pings more then once. So that everyone does not get kicked during map changes. This is nothing to worry about, but if you see this during a game, use the guide mentioned above and check your connection via the tracert command.

Good luck

i had this same problem with my comcast a few weeks back. my ping would jump up to 200+ from time to time. I checked dslreports.com and my upload was terribly low (64k at times) . I called comcast and they boosted signal , and cleared cache on modem. The upload jumped up to over 200k but i still had the ping problem. Strangely enough in the multiplayer option the net speed option was set to isdn. I changed it and my ping problem was gone ? ? I found this info on a q3 tweek page and added it to my unnamedsoldier.cfg

seta rate "30000"
seta cl_maxpackets "60"

when you pick lan in mp options you get rate = 11000 i think. You might wanna try it ? I always thought that option didnt do anything. . . . eek:

Your neighbor is hosting online games or a porn site.
