The Battle of Britain - Timeline

1940

August 1- Hitler decrees the Battle of Britain with the command: 'The German air force is to overcome the British air force with all means at it's disposal, and as soon as possible.'

August 13- 'Eagle Day': The Luftwaffe launches it's air offensive against Britain, with 1,485 sorties. The Germans lose 45 aircraft, the RAF 13.

August 15- In the most intense attack of the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe sends a total of 1,790 sorties over England. They lose 75 aircraft, while Britain loses 34.

August 17- The Germans establish an 'operational area' around Britain; in it, all ships are to be sunk witout warning.

August 25- The RAF conducts it's first raid on Berlin.

September 7- Some 300 German bombers, escorted by 600 fighters, head for the British capital and bomb London's dockland.

September 15- The RAF claims to have shot down 183 German aircraft during daylight Luftwaffe raids on Britan - a figure subsequently found to be greatly exaggerated.

September 17- Hitler postpones Operation Sealion (The Invasion of Britain), until "further notice."

October 12- Operation Sea Lion is postponed until 1941
