Default Why can't I get a better fps? - 04-21-2003, 10:14 AM

I've got a Pent. IV 1.7ghz processor and I just upgraded from a GeForce 2 MX 400 card to a GeForce 4 4600 - but my fps are still only around 50 on some maps when everybody else is getting close to a 100. What's up? Are there any setting I should change to improve my numbers?

1) Get the newest drivers from http://www.nvidia.com

2) Run Auto-Config in the MOH directory (config.exe) so MOH knows you have a new video card.

3) once in game, in the console type [code:b4adb]com_maxfps 250[/code:b4adb]

This will change the cap of your FPS from 99 to 250.

Your P4 1.7 isn't helping much, it was the 2nd slowest, next to the 1.5 that they ever made. Also, if your memory is pc133 or 100 that's not helping you much either.

So? I got a 1.5Ghz machine with a Ti 4600 too, and I got 65FPS normally.

If everything else is equal, then you have some sort of bottleneck that Joe doesnt have. It could be ram, not enough or slower ram, or it could be your mobo and/or frontside bus. You could also have an old windows install that is slowing your system down. Especially if it is win98 or 95. Those two will slowly eat themselves and will lose a fair amount of effcientcy over a year or two of use. How many items do you have in your system tray? Each item may be a program that is running at the same time as the game and sharing resources. What is your system utilization when you are doing nothing?

In short, it could be any of dozens of things and it is hard to tell without seeing all the variables, and even then it might be hard to isolate the true cause. It wont hurt to update your drivers, defrag your hd, minimize the number of items in your sys tray, run virus checks, check the in game settings, etc.

Holy steath programs Batman! I've got 50 processes running!! What the heck is all this stuff!!!!!!! (I'm using XP home edition) I've got 512mb of RAM and only 300 is available (granted, that should be plenty). I just bought a new mobo too - yes, that is the extent of my addiction - I wanted a new vid card but the old mobo could not handle AGP 8x.) I guess my frustration is that I spent money to get a faster vid card and don't feel like I really improved much. I just downloaded the new driver - mine was a couple of months old. It seems to have helped a little but I won't know for sure until later tonight when I get some time to really play.

I got on TS tonight with nuther oldguy. He had me download a really cool software program called 3DMark 2001 SE (free!). It runs benchmarks on your vid card. The cool thing about it is you can make a change in the program and immediately run a test to see if that improves your score. You can get the program at futuremark.com.

BTW - part of my problem was the Aperture size setting in my BIOS was set to 128. I was able to up it to 256. I still have some more issues to work out though. dagnabit!

Lots of possible solutions in this topic.

Also: Setting anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering too high kills FPS.
