I thought mafia was pretty good. Great story line, a little tedious and slow, but still a worthy game. It finally wore me down with having to replay a 10-15 minute segment over and over because you got shot in the last 30 seconds. The lack of a quick save kept me from finishing it and made an otherwise great game only mediocre.

Never played the thing.

One thing I learned about my gaming habits, is that I should never buy more than one game at a time. I will play one and let the other rot, no matter how good.

I love mafia. Unfortunatly it ran like a bitch on my slow pc so i couldnt enjoy it much but when i got it working at a decent frame rate it was great. good story, varied missions, great fun in the cars and getting chased by sterotypical irish police.
And a shocking twist at the end cry:

Maybe gangster stuff isnt your idea of fun, but id give it another chance.
Im sick of MOH. the omaha beach thing was a huge let down. great build up and then.... is that it finished already?

The thing is ok, it has some neat ideas like the fear factor of your team mates. Inject one with a testing fluid and if it comes out negative, he will be pissed off that you dont trust him and hence lose some of your trust and tell you where to go when you ask him to move.
and then running around shooting at nothing freaks out your mates who panic and shoot anything - even you. fun fun fun.

Definatly give both games a chance. dust off that PS2 and get gta:vice city.

i also thoroughly enjoyed mafia. it was like a 30's era gta3...but with better graphics and way better storyline. however , as pest mentioned the lack of a quicksave feature really hampered this games potential. if it had a quicksave the replay value would have been huge. at least for me. i loved the twist at the end, and i loved the shear size of the damn city! amazing.

You have to get your controler working for the race. It only took me a couple of tries once I quit trying to use the keyboard.
