It was 1994: I was 13 years old. It would be a major shift in my lifestyle: I discovered the computer.

That device allowed me to do whatever I pleased with it ! If I fucked it up, it was all my fault and it was my task to fix it before dad found out it was fubar

I had some games included with the computer and quickly learned how to install and play them.. my my ! What a machine ! How glorious it was to discover something that could do better graphics than the Nintendo and Sega systems ! But I got bored of the games I had and needed more...

In my next thread, I will tell the tale of how I discovered the BBS !

Still here !? GOOD !

This thread is for those of you who were old / lucky enough to remember and participate in the BBS days

Shortly after using a pc and playing games, I found an extension in the back of the computer and it had phone jacks integrated in it: I thought, "Hey.. I can plug a phone line in there.. but what for ????"

After talking with a teacher, he told me it was a MODEM (modulator/demodulator): it allowed me to connect to other computers using my phone line ! How sharp !

I discovered the BBS (bulletin board system)shortly after: it was a public/private server that had files, online games and chat apparels... The files that I found were either pictures (more on this later lol), animations (later), games (later) and programs (later) !

My world was forever changed !

In my next thread, more on what I downloaded, how I met the man who got me into the "scene" and how I set-up my OWN bbs !

So I discovered the bbs, the credits & ratios and the goodies I could get.

I was now 14: I had access to most "regular" bbs's in town. I had a normal account and could only download so much... I was lucky to have a 14.4k from the start. Some of my friends still had 2800bauds LOL !

I downloaded some shareware games (ie Duke Nukem, BlakeStone, Hollywood Harry, etc..) and had trouble playing games for the first time ! TIME FOR UPGRADES ? Nah... just a good autoexec.bat and config.sys ! lol... had to free up that conventional memory for those non protected-mode games

I also started making hidden directories and put my pr0n in them ! (porn...) Boy did most of my credits go in those files LOL.

I also discovered PKUNZIP, PKZIP and other compression/decompression programs.. I needed them for the "complete" games.. the WAREZ.

More on my "beginnings" in the scene, my bbs and other good shit soon..

Where was I... ah yes ! The beginning.

I got tired of the same old maximus boards.. I was looking for bigger and better stuff.

By then, I was good friends with the owner of a video store.. little did I know he was the sysop (system operator) of Hellraiser: one of the biggest pirate boards in my province. It was an 8 node board. Not too shabby for the time ! (8 node simply means 8 users could be on at the same time..)

My heart must've skipped a beat when he proposed to let me in his board ! I instantly accepted and he gave me the ring-up (the number that directed you to any free node to connect).

That night, I tried to get on : alot of busy signals until... MODEMS CLASHING AND CONNECTING. What a beautiful sound..

I checked my user info and wowey ! I had leech !!! LEECH !!! (leech means you can download as much as you want for as long as you want)

A new pirate was born

I must've loved those darned things because I decided to make my own soon after I got on Hellraiser.

Aside from trying out for membership on the other boards (be they Maximum, Renegade or PCBoard..) and filling out the "tests" (What does the following abbreviation mean --> PWA, PIL, DOD, etc....), I thought, hey I might as well offer the stuff to friends and tie up the phone line

So I started out with Renegade.. simple enough. Loved the interface and how I could do ANSi drawings as introductions to the board: poor 2800baud users .. haha must've taken them years to get to the login/password screen !

It didn't last too long.. for the INTERNET was almost upon us.

So the internet was now mainstream.. so what?

Well, most distro groups had now found permanent resting places for their stuff and was accessible in a better way than login off a board and dialing up to another: it was now possible to just use ftp software and connect to a site (via its IP and L/P's) to download or upload and while still connected to that one, CONNECT TO ANOTHER ... plus the cops weren't net-savvy yet so it was a golden time for us..

Fast-forward in the future and we're here permanently: no more login on boards with telephone modems... only cable modems...blazingly fast cable modems.. for most of us !

More on what's going now in my next post !

Those were the days If I could go back to then right now, I'd go without a second thought, all the money my parents had then which wouldnt have been much could have been used to invest in the likes of Microsoft and other hugeass multinational corporations, money money money !!! I'd definately have spent more time on school then on computers too hehe But still, seeing Duke Nukem, Halloween Harry, Wolf 3D, it all changed my life, for better or worse I do not know, but it's all had a definate impact on my life. Continue Solidus

I tried playing Willy Beamish not so long ago, but without something to slow it down, it can't be played

It goes too fast and ends up crashing... so dissapointing. I still have the SEGA CD version but without a SCD, I'm in no-luck ville.

I have a request :

If anyone has "TIMEGATE : Knight's Chase", Please let me know !

To continue where I left off :

Ah yes. The INTERNET. The inter-network..
A network of networks. Such a clever way of connecting us all together.. but what did its mainstream popularity do to BBS's and its' users?

It had advantages that the bulletin board systems didn't and COULDN'T have or compete with:

- Superb graphics and multimedia (if your connection didn't die on you before it was finished loading )

- New way of "walking" in the neighborhood without having to change cars all the time: not having to dial-up to another system just to get something was quite a time-saver in the end.

- New methods of doing things and software leading to what I like to call the internet : a huge multi-tasking bbs. We could chat with people WHILE browsing a web page WHILE downloading files from an ftp site.

- I could mention the business aspect, but we aren't concerned with it all that much are we ?

Most groups of the time (Genesis, Razor 1911, Pirates with attitude (PWA) and others) were looking for better ways of getting their warez distributed around (they had more then enough courriers though hahaha) and the internet was not only a) growing in popularity and in use but also, b) alot more useful to them in the end than bbs's.

So the major groups made the jump to DA NET and set-up their private ftp servers and websites. Believe it or not, some boards got connected to the net and they were accessible through TELNET ! lol

In my next post, the police gets savvy

Ah.. the police: such "clever" minds

I'd like to joke around but the only thing I can think of right now is "The Ghostship".
Anyone who was anyone back then knows what happened to the Captain...

He got busted ... and damn was it bad.
That was quite a blow on the scene..

One thing no one knows though, is if he got fucked by an undercover posing as a member of the board; gathering evidence overtime until he had enough or if someone simply snitched.

I'm not sure if anything similar is going to happen again but I know many law enforcement agencies now have computer divisions and the folks that get hired are more than competent.

Our privacy is slowly being taken away from us.. want a good example of how WELL the govt. will be able to fuck you in the ass ? CARNIVORE. Let's not mention Echelon.. some people might get scared.

The future is dark... With theories of one world governments and evil aliens probing you, we have 2 options :

- ph33r and hide
- wait until MOH:AA comes out, play until no more satiasfaction can be derived from it, and THEN ph33r and hide.

Well... I'm out of material for now.. if anyone has anything they want to share please do.
