I am sure that this discussion has been done to death but I have a new thought.
When you are a sniper you have a distinct advantage out in the open, but when you start fighting in the bunkers/hallways you are SCREWED.
I think we should keep snipers because the team has to make a wise decision as to how many snipers to have. Too many snipers and you get your ass kicked in the bunkers. Too few snipers and you never get off the beach.
Personally, I think 1 sniper for 5-10 regular men is about right. If half or more people are snipers it gets f$&@ing ridiculous.
its always amusing to sit in the bunkers and listen to 5-10 '03 shots at once when one of the axis players happen to wander into an MG-42 as the 3-4 people not sniping attempt to get past a 10+ axis team guarding the cannons. for some reason, the allies think the objective is to snipe all the axis, and the axis think the objective is to mow all the allies on the beach down.
As far as Ally snipers @ Omaha, I keep it limited, only 2 or 3 can be snipers, or just no one can snipe, plain and simple. But, you gotta remember: PVT Ryan had a sniper, so. . . You can't say they weren't there.
snipers are a valuable asset, and so are (you guys are going to kill me here) rockets. but not when everyone uses them. 1-2 rocket guys on a team can be useful for taking out a good concentration of enemies quick (no im not talking about running through the corridors suicidally shooting rockets at point blank range)
Yes, I posted on another thread that the admin should be able to set a ratio. Say 1 sniper, 1 rocket, 2 MGs, 4 smgs, 4 garands, etc. So with more people you could have another sniper. However, as above, I also mentioned that you won't like it when some idiot takes the only available sniper, will you?
