Canada loses World War I combat vet
Canadian Press
Saturday, May 08, 2004
GARDENA, Calif. (CP) - The last surviving Canadian combat veteran of the First World War has died, in what Veterans Affairs calls another blow to the country's living history.
Clifford Holliday, a U.S. citizen who was born in Plumas, Man., died Tuesday at his home in southern California, at the age of 105.
"We lost a national treasure, actually a binational treasure," said Janice Summerby, a spokeswoman with Veterans Affairs Canada. "Our living history is ebbing away."
"He pretty much passed away on his own terms," longtime friend Robert Johnson told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif. "He was a pretty determined person and he was ready to go."
Only eight of the 650,000 Canadians who served in the war remain and Holliday was the last who fought in combat, said Shane Diaczug, communications director for the Canadian minister of veterans affairs.

Its too bad all these guys are gone now. Just think, in 20 years there will be no WWII vets left.

Ya know being a patriot... For both the U.S and liberty its always sad to see stuff like this, Veterns risked their asses, gave their time and payed their dues. Its always hard to see a soldier die, especially one from over 8 decades ago.
RIP.

Although I'm grateful for the help of these canadians in ridding the world
of that menace, I still believe it's sad that we remain fixated on the past
instead of looking to the future. Maybe I'm not appreciative enough...

But if we forget the past, won't the same thing just happen again?
I know what your saying though soli, and i do agree.

We lost our last WW1 vet a year or two ago. It really sucks, If I knew how I'd feel about this now, a couple of years ago - I would have made an effort to properly thank one of the vets in person.

I'm not saying that we should forget it: rather, we need to stop focusing so
much on what happened and turn our attention to what COULD, using what
we know of the past to positively affect the future. The mourning is getting
a bit tiresome...
