Default Half-Life 2 Hackers Arrested - 06-11-2004, 09:07 PM

I'm on the press release mailing list for Valve/Sierra - got this in my inbox from Doug Lombardi today:

ARRESTS MADE IN RELATION TO HALF-LIFE 2 THEFT

Online Community Tracks Down Hackers

June, 10 2004 – Arrests have been made in several countries related to the break-in to Valve’s network, theft of the Half-Life 2 source code, and release of the source code on the Internet.

“Within a few days of the announcement of the break-in, the online gaming community had tracked down those involved,” said Gabe Newell, Valve’s CEO. “It was extraordinary to watch how quickly and how cleverly gamers were able to unravel what are traditionally unsolvable problems for law enforcement related to this kind of cyber-crime.”

Thousands of tips were received related to the criminal activities, with a core group of people who were able to analyze and backtrack from these clues. Subsequent to these individuals being identified, Valve has been working with various national authorities to prepare cases against those involved, leading to these arrests.

“It was very uplifting to see how the community rallied and tracked these people down. Everyone here at Valve is once again reminded of how much we owe to the gaming community,” added Mr. Newell.

For specific details on the arrests, please contact the Northwest Cyber Crime Task Force, Seattle, 206-262-2030.[/quote:79c99]

grow up ? how about you stfu ? They blew the hron on Valve's little scam, which came at the cost of many gamers. (not that i was really caring but there are people who were). They just gave valve a flcik in the balls. All i know is Half life 2 has 3 times the hype and 3 times the press after all of this. + tell me please how do you let something as valueble as source code get leaked ? no hacker would be able to get to this shit, let alone would a key component of valve allow the fucking "source code" to go his email account. It was all a publicity stunt and a side track off of the fact they weren;t finished and fucked up. Honestly its such bull shit. Im glad they cost Valve money for scamming the general public. rock:

I guess it was a scam that they enginerred this break in - yet Shorts glad the broke in took place? So I guess Short believes Valve created the break-in so that they could expose themselves as frauds. Or some other block-head (and yes Short does have a block-head) logic.

Its thier product, they can release it whenever they want. They dont owe the community anything. If they want to piss off their customers thats fine, but that doesnt mean its ok for someone to steal their ideas, creations and projects.
