Freezing problems -
11-30-2004, 04:31 PM
Yes another computer problem.
I have searched for an answer, but I cannot find one, so I am turning to the youthful and gifted minds here at gf1.
Latley my computer is freezing up at random times. It doesn't seem to be when I do a certain operation or load a certain program, it will freeze when i'm typing this paragraph, or when the computer is just idling there when i'm away from it. It'll freeze when surfing the net, or typing a letter.
I'm running win xp professional, without any service packs because of certain "things".
Cooling shouldn't be an issue because i ahev an antec case with 5 case fans. I ahve an internal temperature monitor and everything in there is OK. CPU and mobo is good.
I updated my bios (asus A8V delux 1008)
i have a gig of ram, so i don't see that being the issue.
What other things could be causing this?
I ran a registry cleaner, and spyware cleaner, i'm going to run an antivirus right now, and hopefully i can get through a whole cycle.
Any ideas? It's sucks having to restart the computer 10 times a day. Especially with antec making the fucking restart button so small that you have to push it with the tip of a pen.

heat maybe.
if by "things" you mean its not an official copy of xp i wouldnt worry about it and update anyway ( i have ). it might have something to do with you not being up to date as well. plus, itd probably be a good idea to get the security updates.

Run task manager and when your PC freezes, see if anything spikes the CPU usage up to 99%.

I've had xp on this system installed since september with no problems.
normally i would just reformat, but i have 120gig hd and a wireless network setup so it would take a long time to set all that shit up again, so i'd rather not.
do you need sp1 to install sp2? cause i haven't installed either. I think I tried to install SP1 once but it wanted me to activate windows again, and for some reason i couldn't get around it, like i could without sp1.

Well, it seems to ahve worked because my computer hasn't frozen once since i installed sp2, however, i have "misplaced" "my" serial number and therefore cannot activate windows. If anyone knows where I left it, please let me know. Thanks for your help guys.
