Default Webhost: Customer Service - 02-23-2005, 10:32 AM

My website is currently hosted on streamline.net, As well as the main site i have an additional section 'extranet' which is phpnuke based (I know - i dont like phpnuke either but it does exactly what i need it to do i.e. login, news, forum, knowledge base etc all in one package). Anyway's I noticed that whenever I tried uploading my backups from home (I edit and test my phpnuke installation offline) These files include the database and the files, Anyway uploading was taking fuckin ages, I mean 4 hours for a 30-50 meg file, Once this was complete i then executed my backed up .sql file (via phpmyadmin) and this kept timing out.

So I submitted a support ticket to my host asking wtf was going on.

This is their reply
[quote:ad8be]The problem with shared hosting is that you are sharing the server with other people, and if at any point another website on the same server becomes popular it is going to effect your website. If you require a fast, responsive website 100% of the time we suggest you use a dedicated server.[/quote:ad8be]

I mean WHAT THE FUCK??, I pay for my hosting (its not the cheapist package, infact its one of the more expensive packages), Instead of trying to resolve my problem i.e. move the busy site to another server - they basically said they cant be bothered and to buy a dedicated server, I wouldnt mind, my site isnt busy enough to need a dedicated server, but i dont expect to pay for something that i cant use because the MySql server keeps timing out half way through an upload.

So fuck this once my package expires i'll be changing webhost.

Nyck posted (a while back) a pretty good deal with dreamhosting.com for about 10.00 a year (for the first year). Can't remember the specifics but the "deal" may still be on...

might still work, plus i could use another possible referral rock:

dude, its not the host its you. it all depends on how big the sql file is. it WILL timeout if the uploading takes more then 2 minutes usually. you have to seperate the sql file and upload multiple parts of it as a time. i had like a 200mb sql fiel that took me more then 2 hours to copy and paste some text into and execute the query. just seperate the sql file and do it bit by bit.
