Several chimpanzees escaped from their cages at an animal sanctuary in California and chewed off a man's face off, according to doctors. oOo:
Sanctuary workers at the Animal Haven Ranch shot and killed two of the powerful animals.
A local television station said the chimps attacked a couple who were visiting another chimpanzee that used to be their pet.
The couple were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after the attack.
Dr. Maureen Martin, of Kern Medical Center, told the television station that the monkeys "chewed most of the man's face off" and said he would require extensive surgery in an attempt to re-attach his nose.
The woman had serious bites to her hands and arms.
Martine Colette, animal director of the Wildlife WayStation, a sanctuary near Los Angeles said chimpanzees can turn nasty if not treated properly.
"Chimps are notoriously strong and they have some very, very specific behaviours," she said.
"If someone tries to confine them, they will definitely put up a fight."
The chimp that had been a pet was not involved in the attack, the authorities said.
