Conservative caucus members have agreed unanimously that they should act now to try to topple the ruling Liberals, party Leader Stephen Harper says.
Harper made the comment after the caucus met for two hours on Monday night, wrestling to decide if the time was right for a bid to oust Prime Minister Paul Martin and his minority government.
"I think there is a unanimous view that the Conservative Party cannot support the government, we cannot support their programs, we cannot support a government that is mired in this kind of corruption and scandal," Harper told reporters.
He challenged Martin and the Liberals to face a confidence vote now, instead of using stalling tactics to avoid a move that Harper called inevitable.
"To do otherwise would in all likelihood be to unnecessarily delay an election until the summer," Harper said.
The decision comes despite public opinion polls on the weekend that suggested the Liberals may be regaining some of the ground lost due to the sponsorship scandal.
Some Conservatives had quietly questioned the logic of forcing an election that polls indicate many Canadians don't want. [/quote:69f4c]

personally i've heard the conservatives say the will listen to the people on whether or not to call a non confidence vote...although it doesn't really sound like theier listening very hard. on the other hand the liberals are trying to buy time to rebound. its true that the longer the wait for an election, the better it is for the liberals because people will not be as angry as there were last month.
all in all i think the election should wait until the gomery inquiry is finished. although it seems as though parliment can't get anything done. it would be nice if the parties could agree to move on with other things, and then once the gomery inquiry is finished have an election, but thats not going to happen, so perhaps an election would be a good thing.
