Default Network Problem - 05-03-2005, 03:29 AM

I came home from school the other day and brought my computer home to hook up to our wireless network. I set up my computer and BAM! its instantly connected to the internet. Everything is fine and dandy, then all of the sudden my internet starts slowing down and then cuts out. The computer hardwired also cuts out. I fiddle around and get the hardwired one to work, then i go to check my comp and its working .. but slow as hell. The wireless comp is always slow or not even connected at all. Any one have any ideas?

I've restarted the modem and router, changed cat5s ... any clue?

I put that into consideration but the biggest problem now is gettting the wireless computer to work and not be be slow.

Powerfail the cable modem and the wireless router, sometimes that helps with me. Do you have WEP enabled? If so turn it off, too much overhead and basically worthless as far as security goes.

Depending on how far you are away from the WAP (wireless access point), structural interference (walls and such) and other microwave emitting objects (wireless phones) all these can slow it down or cut it off

instead of restarting it, if you can get to some options somewhere where you can reset the router to factory settings then try over again.

another problem is that you might be connected to the wrong wireless network? or maybe other people leaching off your wireless network?

Its not really hacking, its piggy-backing. the difference is they dont have to do anything to get in, just sit with in range. And KTOG you didnt say anything about how long it was up prior. Check priority of computer. This will help determine if youre being leeched off of. If you are, change the security settings. Check the manual for help on this. The main one you should use should be limiting the number of IP addresses the network will have, and or add the IP of the machine to the Allow List
