New shit coming out all the time, ati's bringing out their own motherboards which support "crossfire" which is 2 cards linked together like sli, but has other benefits of stuff like 14x antialiasing (current maximum is 6x on ati).
Probably better waiting till you're about to order it before getting an idea of specs for it. Obviously pci express is a must have, as for memory, id say 2 gigs is what you're looking for, 1 gig is pretty much the standard now and mores gonna be needed.
Also dual core cpu's are starting to be pumped out, at the minute though not a lot supports them, games will eventually support them though. Then you have PPU cards which is a physics processing unit, another add in card pc's will start using eventually which takes the physics processing load off the cpu freeing up your cpu time.

Agp is dieing out, pci express is the new standard. 8x agp wasn't even used fully till they decided to basically ditch it in favour of pci express. Pci express basically gives more bandwidth for the card to use, lets you use multiple graphics cards simaltaniously (crossfire, sli).

Sli 2 is probably just gonna start bringing in some of the crossfire features like more antialiasing modes or something. If they are then despite nvidia releasing their multi card setup first they'll be playing catchup, in terms of features at least.
