Default US to phase out ‘war on terror’ - 07-28-2005, 04:04 PM

[quote:a3d4b]
Washington, July 27: The “war on terror”, the resonant catchphrase of the Bush administration for the past four years, is to be discreetly phased out in favour of more nuanced language, officials signalled yesterday.

The rebranding is part of what America’s critics will say is a long overdue acknowledgement by the Pentagon of the complexity of the challenge of combating al Qaida.

“As the struggle evolves some of the language will evolve as well,” a senior administration official said.

Officials are instead starting to favour the rather less snappy phrase “struggle against violent extremism” as the administration puts increased stress on longer term initiatives — diplomatic, economic and educational — to defeat terrorism.

The phrase “war on terror” was “very simple, easy, concise”, the official said. “The definition lends itself to images of those in uniform combating extremism and terrorists but the struggle is broader than that.”

President George W Bush sought to rally the nation and the world to America’s side in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks when he declared a “war” against terrorism.

His language was initially hailed as reflecting the extraordinary nature of the threat. But the phrase rapidly fell out of favour with America’s allies as they argued that it over-simplified the challenge by suggesting that force of arms was enough to defeat Osama bin Laden.

In a significant shift reflecting America’s difficulties in Iraq and their failure to catch bin Laden, Pentagon officials have started to make clear that they too believe force is not enough for victory.

We can't win "the war" so.....uhhh.......let's call it a "struggle" instead. oOo:

People that say that are probably the same type of people that believe america didn't lose in vietnam. Even though you get the rare occasion where someone will actually say it. spank:

we lost because we couldnt go after the NVA and VC they way it should have been done , just like we cant go after these scumbag terrorists , because certain people in goverment think we are too "hard on them" . they didnt give a shit about 9/11 or the civilians in England , or the people that get blown-up in israel . this is the new way of warfare. someone has to stand-up to these people .

do i offend you because i actually think these terrorists are cowardly killers who have hijacked a religion to make it look like what they are doing is right ? i will stand up for my country. if you feel the need to delete my post then by all means do so , but i wont let you people bash america any longer.

You and mr. buttocks are the only people on your side of the fence that really present a strong case.

When the iraqi goverment wants the US to leave , then i believe we should leave iraq, but not until they can defend their country from iran and syria.

I'm not going to delete anyones post. I don't think i've deleted anyones post here ever.

i'm not bashing america. i like america a lot. i was there last year with the army.

my political views differ from that of your government. i dislike your government.

The US will leave iraq when they want to. The iraqi government ins't in control of Iraq. The US is.

Why would the US go to iraq and sacrifce nearly 2000 sons for no gain? There must be something. It sure isn't freedom.

it was time for saddam to pay the piper for all the shit he did to the iraqi people , whether it was done the right way , well that can be debated for years , but you know and the world knows that saddam was not very kind to his people they should have finished the job in the first gulf war.

This whole "Global Struggle on Extremism" or "War on Terror" fiasco is one big joke. You can't fight an abstract form like terrorism or Al-Queda. Its like trying to get rid of a puddle by hitting it with a brick. It dosen't work.
