Camera question -
09-10-2005, 12:31 PM
So I'll be recieving a lot of money in the next week, bday is coming up.
I've decided I want to get back into photography. My dad was a professional photographer for Merck, but he was promoted into another department a LONG time ago. So he has a LOT of SLR cameras for me to use. My dad and I talked, and its not worth setting up a temporary darkroom everytime i need to develop things, and I dont have enough time to do it at my school darkroom.
So we are looking into digital SLR cameras. I've been looking at a 6-8 megapixel camera. Here are my options...

I know anti knows about digital SLR cameras, and hopefully others do. Any comments, suggestions, or any random info would be greatly appreciated.

Nikon D70 or Canon Digital Rebel XT
The Nikon D50 is a very stripped down version of the D70 and the DRXT is a far better buy at those prices.
As for which to get between the D70 and XT... Which ever fits your budget better. They are both great and take excellent pictures. The DRXT has more of a variety of lenses, and when you buy SLR you are buying a system to use those lenses. So I think in that sense, Canon is better than Nikon. If you are going to only buy a few lenses for basic use, then both cameras are even.
First, I suggest you go to best buy and try them both out, see which is more comfortable. For non-professional use the D70 and XT are pretty much dead even.

Nikon may not have alot of lens choices (which isn't exactly a problem imo), but the lenses they do make are of top notch quality.
I would say it's between the d70 and the rebelxt, but i havent used the minolta (let alone seen it being used). i dont hear much about it and i dont see it being used/talked about as wide spread as the rebel and d70. Both the d70 and rebelxt have their ups and downs, it all depends on what you're looking for. personally, i like my d70 better. it has a better functionality and is overall easier to use. plus, manual mode feels like a true slr cameral with two dials that each control apeture and shutter. i havent used a rebelxt but i have used a rebel through school and it just didn't feel right in my hands. the auto focusing didnt seem that great on the rebel, while the d70s is top notch and easily controllable. my info may be in accurate since i havent used the rebelxt yet, but i do know 8mp (xt) > 6mp(d70). go to a camera store, and ask to shoot with both cameras. thats the only way youll be able to tell what you really want.

fucking kids these days are fucking spoiled rotten.
I had 2 sets of grand parents and 9 sets of aunts and uncles and never got anywhere near fucking enough to afford $1000 dollar cameras and shit.
I might have got like 100 bucks plus some other presents.

D50 has no DOF button, a smaller CCD sensor, and a 430-segment matrix meter (to put that in perspective the D70 has a 1005-segment meter).
It's very stripped down compared to the D70 and since the DRXT is only $100 more, it's not worth it.
