Default CD-ROM Drive - 01-05-2006, 02:34 PM

My friend's mom's CD-ROM drive broke, it stopped being able to read CD's. His mom bought an external hp dvd-writer (USB). The problem was that the external drive came with a CD to install it but the other CD-ROM drive is broken so we couldn't install the external drive. I don't think the software is available for download. Now, when I tried to put in an old spare internal CD-ROM drive, the computer saw it, tried to install it automatically but then said it hadn't installed correctly. In Device Manager, the drive is recognized under the CD/DVD category, but the icon for it has an exclamation point over it and you can't see the drive in My Computer.

im no expert on cd drives or anything, but i had an external dvd writer, and it didnt require any drivers. just software to burn the dvds.

just trying putting in the cd in the dvd burner when it is plugged in. it should work, i believe windows has like generic cd drive drivers i remember someone said that on here before.

if that doesnt work, use someone elses computer to explorer the cd and copy the drivers and or the whole cd to a usb or w/e and install it that way
if its just the drivers, copy all the driver files, not the file itself to the system folder
