Default Magazine Cover & Colour In. - 02-21-2006, 11:39 PM

Basicly had 2 projects due this week. One was a project involving colouring in a Illustrator drawing our teacher did by hand (tablet), and a Magazine Cover done in Indesign due for Print Class....

*Exported File

*Magazine Cover ( YES I know Katie Holmes..... but it was a high res picture which was easy to work with.)

First, your art teacher has some mad skills. That's a great Sub-Zero drawing.

Second - great coloring and shading on Sub-Zero. Great job!

Third - I can't tell what you did on Katie Holmes. .... which must mean you did amazingly good job.

that magazine cover is poor, the fonts and sizes are bad choices, the page is barely readable and looks empty.

i wouldnt say its poor ... the layout is nice but i think you need to tighten up the leading on some of the headlines, as well as the headings / description columns ( dunno if thats all in one box or two , if one tighten the leading up a bit ). otherwise i think youre in good shape. i dont know if i would go with that face for the name ... its a nice face but , i think i would probably try to use something ( the same face just not textured would be nice ) solid.

:also you might wanna look into setting a margin down the left side and lining that shit up. i would leave the bar with free blah blah alone.

utting a margin down the right side would also allow you to put both of those pull quotes in a nice postition and you wouldnt have to use the white/black combos on the mj quote, unless you are going for some kind of design effect with that. in which case i would probably increase the font size on both.

its be nice if you fuk wits could as least express what it is you think "is poor" about something if you feel the need to rip on it ... otherwise get a fuking clue and stfu.

yeah, I'm not a fan of the typography either, it just doesn't look right, but typography is a hard thing to do.

the face fits the subject well ... no doubt about it. and by no means let what we are saying dissuade you from being daring in your design decisions.

my reasoning behind suggesting a bolder / more solid face is that your title, in this case, is your secondary focal point and you most likely want it to be LARGE and BOLD. the texture kind of takes away from that somewhat ... you might could try that same face in bold and see if it helps any.

Ya.. I never really measured out all the spaces between those bodys of text... I did it by eye for the most part.

AND

THE REASON elstatec/c213/strvs why you CAN NOT read the text is becasue Indesign is "mainly" a Vector based program. So when you are forced to convert something that should be 300 to 600 dpi and vector based into a 72dpi RASTER based format Jpeg and forced to zoom out a little, the text which was perfectly readible inside Indesgn, or a PDF file becomes impossible to read in a JPEG on IE. Yes it seems a bit unaligned, but this is only becasue I had to calibrate everything for the Campus print shop, for some reason the bleed line was off when printed and the bar code WENT off the Slug line somehow...It cost me 6 bucks as well for that fuck up..... ed: All extremely easy to edit. though if there are any mistakes, Indesign is extremely Intuitive. I honestly feel it is a much superior program to Quark / Quark Express

AND I fail to see how they are poor font choices.. NONE are sarif, all are modern, and the "Rough" title is done in a font which chippage which corolates to the meaning of the word itself.... loney:

**OHH and just a side note.. There is no aliasing option in indesign. None are needed really.

I just don't like the font used in the orange lettering on the left side, that's all, it's probably just me...

hmm he does make a valid point about the font tho ... seems kind of flat and dull ... you probably want to direct attetion to those areas and that color just isnt doing it ...

Again that is a monitor issue.... IT is a dark dark red when Printed. (cmyk, NOT rgb...) AND yes I agree the titled fonts could have more "flavour". Ill shitty issues when trying to preview something that should be in print...

Also IF you are using an LCD you have no form of colour calibration. So basicly everything will look like shiite no matter what. If you still own a CRT Colour calibrate it.

yes, i do have an lcd, so i understand why the color looks off now. I still don't like the font though, the color wasn't the only thing that bothered me about it.
