Default Mac vs PC? - 05-11-2006, 02:09 AM

Just want some good info here..

Basically I had always heard that macs handle programs like photoshop and video editing better, but recently I have been hearing that this only applied 5+ years ago, before mac switched to different CPUs or something that made them essentially a PC in a pretty box which runs a mac OS. Is this true? Are macs basically PCs these days as far as hardware is concerned? I also have heard that you can now run OS X on a PC, so why would anyone buy expensive macs? (other than the 'trendy' factor)

Just curious, I dont know much about this stuff.

The only advantage I find with Mac's = when I am doing anytype of Video Editing. (1:1 rendering capability) PC's for the most part have matched or surpassed MAC's in every-single way, and the proprietary nature which they enjoyed with the G" series CPU's is now gone. To put it short, they are becoming more of a "statement" then an actaul working machine. AND to be honest, IF you are serious into any type of video editing, you will be using a professional VIDEO SWEET. (AN ACTAUL SYSTEM EQUIPPED WITH VRAM). Vram = whaty allows it to render in realtime on the fly etc.

-BUT to put this into perspective, 1mb of Sram is under a doller, while a single MB of Vram will run you over 94 $.

-Lastly, trends are changing, LOTR was completely done in Sony Vegas Pro....NOT Avid, NOT Premier, and NOT FCP. Industry standard setting programs are falling from favrotism, Cumbustion and After Effects are one of the large battles out their right now.

you cant run os x on pc.

i posted about mac vs pc editing/loading large graphic files ( 300dpi files @ 3x4in and up ) a while back. my laptop ( powerpc 1.42 ghz ) handled loading the graphics better than my 3.2 ghz pc. so much so that while working on a project with huge files i did it all on the mac. my pc just took WAY too long to load / render the files for viewing. there was a pretty long wait for the files to load on my pc while they loaded instanty ( no wait at all ) on the mac. i have no idea why ...

macs are the industry standard for graphic arts.

i know very little about them right now, so i wont pretent to know anything more than what ive experienced myself.

look around here some if you want :

its not something youre gonna come across commercially , and i havent seen it anywhere in the ngs. youd probably have to know a shit load about programming and hardware to get it to run on a pc.

i bought one because they are standard in the design community.

like i said above tho, it has proven to be a much better platform for editing / rendering large graphic files than my pc.

the keyboard you have to use but its not much different than the pc : cmd (apple key) = ctrl , option = alt , and they function the same as pc ...

you can use any usb mouse with them.
